Potty training

Opinions on if dd is ready

I thought she might be so we started giving it a go yesterday.

She was excited about wearing pants and not wearing nappies. We've been reading books and prepping her for a few weeks.

Yesterday she wore pants. We had 8 accidents including 2 poos in pants. By the end of the day she was starting to sit on the potty after she'd had an accident. I was putting her on the potty every 20mins of so but no luck. She started getting a bit refusing bit I've bribed her with choc buttons.

Today I've tried pant free (was thinking maybe she felt like she had a nappy on with her pants) so far we've had a poo on the carpet, one in the potty (yay, this is our only success so far) and a wee on the floor about a min after she's sat on the potty.

She is 2.8yo and verbal so she understands and has the verbal capacity to tell me if she needs to go (starting to think she's possibly not physically feeling a full bladder though)

She's now talking more about putting her nappies back on etc.

My gut is she's not ready and I was all for giving it today then quitting but I feel a bit like now we've had one success I need to keep going.

She's at nursery tmrw morning

i don't think this is a popular opinion on MN, but IMO it wouldn't be called "training" if it all just clicked on day one. Both my children took a few days to get the hang of it, dd1 in particular. I would stick at it for a minimum of a week and if there's no process whatsoever I'd give it a rest for a week.

Is it possible for her to stay off nursery? If you work, and decide to have another go, I'd book some annual leave to give it a proper go at home.

She has to go to nursery unfortunately and I'm a teacher so no chance of booking annual leave until summer holidays (we didn't do it over half term as we were away on holiday)

I don't think I expected it to click after a day but she seems totally unaware of when she needs a wee. How on earth do I train her if she has no awareness of when she needs to go (I don't mean that aggressively I genuinely ask for ideas!)

I think I would wait until the summer holidays and then give it another go, especially if she's asking for nappies.

IMO if you have to train then they're not ready.

Better a month too late than a day too soon.

just encourage as much potty time as possible
read books sat on it
do jigsaws sat on it
sing nursery rhymes sat on it
watch a bit of cbeebies sat on it (all especially 15mins after a drink)

go MAD with rewards when the tiniest drop of wee lands in the right place (not just a button, but also a sticker on a chart, and a smiley face, and a phone call to grandma to say what a big girl she is)

TBH though I'd leave it until you're off over the summer, and you can just stay at home giving lots of positive reinforcement. I took a week of leave for each of mine, which gives 9 days including the weekend. First four days were AWFUL, second five ok, and we were done by the end.

I think that's the problem atm, we have nursery and swimming etc during the week.

I'm happy to keep going with it now if i knew she was physically ready.

She can tell me she's done a poo in her nappy. She seems surprised when she wees. Even when I ask if she needs a wee or a poo she will say no then wee a few seconds later.

I've got a chart and we've done loads of praise for sitting on the potty and when she's sat on it after a wee etc.

I spent ages reading books sitting on it, watching cbeebies, I've put it in a private place she likes to hide to poo (when she has nappies on)

She keeps refusing to even try sitting on it now, hence the bribes to try.

I think I'm feeling like she should be ready because she's the last one in our nct group, most other toddlers I know are trained. Yet my gut says she's my physically ready yet.

We're currently 2 weeks into potty training and it's just starting to click. I was about to give up when I read somewhere on here that it's a good idea to do lots of time with no nappy or pants. As soon as we did that DS took himself off to the potty for a wee with no prompting (he was having accidents in pants unless we told him to go on potty at right time). So maybe on the days you're at home do nappy free time and then give it a proper go when off in holidays.

Thanks but we've quit!

We tried no nappies, it involved her wandering around while pooing! I think we'll try again in the holidays.

I need to accept that just because lots of other toddlers are ready doesn't mean ours is. I also think I need dh around for a bit to help for the first few days.

I'm training my DD she will be 3 soon. She has occasionally flirted with the toilet so I decided it was time. She refused at first, demanded nappies, the more I asked her if she needed to wee or poo the more she rebelled. It was emotional journey and I was tempted to quit, but I figured it would make any future attempts worse. In the end I told her she is charge of getting her wee and poo home in the toilet and she was to just ask me. I made no fuss of mess and cleaned her up each time, she was very upset about it in the beginning. But it's stopped a power struggle. it's took 6 days and she's practically nailed it. I can't believe it if I'm honest, she is so proud of herself. Also I have no idea why but she was petrified of the potty, I think because we all use the toilet she didn't understand it. So maybe worth going straight to toilet?
