DS (2.4) started potty training a month ago, ish.

At home he confidently walks to the potty, pulls his own pants and trousers down, goes in the potty. We had a few weeks of poo pants but that has worn off, he has had about 3 accidents in the last week. Out and about he will go in a big toilet with some whining... at Grannies he has the odd accident.

At nursery, he just will not ask to go. When they ask him he says no. The only way he goes on the potty there is if they take him directly to it, take his trousers down for him, and sit him on it. He just pees his pants 5 times a day, or poos Hmm and seems to not care.

I appreciate this is not really their job and they have 10 or so other kids to manage as well, there is one lass who seems to take a bit more effort in getting him to go but any tips on how to get him to take the initative? Every day when I drop him off I say 'you have to ask the nursery ladies if you need to do a wee' and he says yes ok, and then just doesn't!

Lots of home safe techniques just won't work there, he cant run around pantsless, I can't give them a bag of chocolate buttons to bribe him with (never required at home), I can't be there to ask or tell him every 5 minutes and he is generally quite low maintenance; just potters about by himself, so he is not right in their centre of attention.

No idea but I just wanted to start a similar thread. Nursery insisting on pull ups so poor DC doesn't know if she's coming or going as at home it's the knickers all the way.

They haven't insisted on anything yet but I know it must be frustrating for them.

On the other hand I can't help thinking if they spent a bit more time taking him to the potty and praising him for using it, they could spend less time changing wet clothes...

Surely a decent nursery should be working with you on toilet training.

In every other respect they seem to be fab. I think I need to try and have a longer conversation with them and find out exactly how they manage it.

The potty is in an ajoining room so not in immediate view, he plays by himself mostly while the more high-maintenance kids want songs/cuddles etc he is very rarely in the centre of the 'tired pile' around the leader at picking up time, he will be off in the play house or sandpit.

I think because he doesn't demand constant attention, they sometimes forget he might need to go, or even he is unwilling to interrupt them dealing with other boys and girls so he can get the door opened Sad. As well as the normal 'it's just so much more exciting/more to do/ he forgets' stuff. Getting frustrating now though wether it is an issue with them or him.

They just keep saying 'He'll get there' with slightly more worn looks on their faces... nice attentive girl was in today and he came home in the trousers he went in!

Hi. Depending on how they group the kids he may also be only one of a few being trained. At ds2's nursery it is 6 month groups between 18m and 36 months. Ds2 was pretty reliable at home at 2 but nursery didn't expect him to be potty training so didn't have a routine of 'let's all go to the toilet and wash our hands before lunch / going outside etc'. Now he is 3 this is the norm although he can ask as well.

Yes, the Toddler group is 22 months to 3 years so they are all at some stage of potty training. I don't know how the others manage/how many accidents they have tbh. He was actually better to start with and now just seems to not see it as a big deal to go in his pants whereas at home he makes an announcement 'I'm going to sit on the potty!' and if you don't acknowledge it he will make sure you do...

I have exactly the same issue with my son! Dedicated loo, max ball down the loo, nothing works at nursery but no help needed at home! A defiant little so and so I think!

Mine is the same, she just doesn't go at nursery. Before we put her in pants she was willing to try but now seems freaked out by the prospect of trying at nursery.

She can hold it from 8.30 to 12 and then she walks into the bathroom and finds a nappy to put on herself. Hmm
