Potty Training Confusion

I am about to potty train my ds. He is 27 months and i feel he is ready for this step. He already goes to the bathroom with mummy and daddy and understands whats happening. The problem is he is my 1st child. My mother in law has said that you should get them straight into pants and pull ups at night, however my childminder has said she will not do this and that i should sit him on the potty for an hour before bathtime for a week, the following week an hour in the morning and gradually build this up. What is best for my ds as i dont want to confuse him.

Sit him on the potty for an hour? Would any child agree to that? Or does she mean nappy free time with the potty around?

You have to do what is best for your son. I found spending 2 days tackling it (first day he was naked for most of it) was fine for DS and he was pretty much sorted after that but I know I was very lucky.

I would be careful with pull ups and night though because I found they don't hold as much as nappies do.

The childminder said to sit him on the potty for an hour before bathtime watching tv (Not that he sits that long on anything for that amount of time). My other family members have agreed with my mother in law. Maybe i need a new childminder. She already lets my son sleep for 2hrs a day when i have specifically asked her to only let him have half an hour

My youngest dd is 28 months and I can't imagine getting her to sit on the potty for 5 minutes never mind an hour.

How about waiting until you have some holidays off work. That's what I did with my older 2. They maybe could've been potty trained a month or 2 earlier than they were but it was just easier all round to wait until we had some free time and could just focus on that. They were 2.6 at the time.

Also with regard to night times I would continue with nappies as pull ups don't hold as much wee.

Best of luck
