Potty training

Did the gradual approach to potty training work for anyone?

Dd is 26 months. Very advanced linguistically. Tells me when she's done a poo or wee though occasionally gets them confused. Is obvious when she's pooing. Not so weeing.

For about three months she's taken great interest in toilets. Always watches me. Wants to give me the loo roll. Talks about toilets and potties etc.

Started potty training today. Bought exciting knickers etc. had sticker chart. Spoke about it.

But just didn't work. She loves sitting on toilet. Loves the stickers. But just doesn't know when she's about to wee. In fact three of her four accidents came about five mins after sitting on loo (at my instigation).

Part of problem is I hate being in our very small house all day. We always have at least one thing to do even if trip to park or post office. And if she doesn't get chance to run around in park or have a walk she just goes a bit crazy and doesn't sleep.

So today after four accidents we put nappy on at midday and went to park. Then we were all much happier and kept nappy on all afternoon. Before her bathsheba instigated sitting on loo. Sat there for five mins while we chatted but no wee.

Another factor is I have an eight week old so can't always attend to get immediately as breasts wedding or changing nappy etc.

Anyway I know it's young to potty train so is fine if we postpone it a bit but I don't want to miss the window of her being interested.

Anyone got advice? Shall I just wait until spring an do it when she can run around nappy less in my parents bug garden all day?

And does the softly softly approach work eg potty or toilet in evening and when she asks but not all the time and then take her lead?

Am a bit miserable about my failure at this today. All advice and approached appreciated.

Hey, I potty trained my daughter at that exact same age with a new born also. She had peed on the potty a couple of times before I decided to potty train. Tbh, it took about 4 days and she had loads of accidents. Like you, I liked to get her outside and so she did have a few accidents at the park. And she did seem to wee on the floor every time she wanted attention when I was bf or otherwise busy with the baby. But it was worth it. That was two years ago and now I have to potty train her brother (which I suspect might take a bit more effort, don't know if I can be bothered). Good luck!

I didn't do potty training in that sense, softly softly worked well for us. Dd1 basically did it herself at 2.5, no stress, no staying home. Wait til she's ready and save yourself the hassle.

you could try using pull up nappies (easy to get up and down) and then take her to the toilet regularly - once she is successful make a big fuss about it. I did this with ds and once he started asking to go to the toilet and could hold on until he got there I put him into pants. He was day trained by age 2.
