Advice on whether to start tomorrow? And on bribes!(7 Posts)
I and the CM have thought for a while that DD was close to if not ready for potty training. This evening after a few failed attempts to get DD to sit on potty before bath - just as the pre-training idea - she sat down to watch Peppa Pig on my iPhone/YouTube for a couple of episodes. When she stood up she'd weed. I was so excited as if she wees on the carpet the odd time during nappy off time she gets upset, but she seemed totally cool about it. I gave her lots of hugs and praise, and (possibly big mistake) a tiny chocolate coin.
Now I'm wondering if - as we have no plans for the weekend and I have a day off on Monday - I should just bite the bullet and try potty training, on the basis if it doesn't work we can stop and leave it til summer?
DD is 2y 1mo, very verbal and understands a lot. She is pretty amenable (bearing in mind she's 2!). I am due to have DC2 in April so if I don't do it now/soon probably can't til summer. CM would be supportive (she's told me so). However one other important factor is DH is away for two weeks (we're half way through) and DD is missing him quite a bit. She's not upset as in crying, but we talk about him a lot (he does all after CM care 4 days/wk).
Whether I should go ahead or not, also wondering if big mistake to use Peppa on YouTube to get her to sit on potty and/or chocolate. Was thinking we could do a sticker chart and when she gets three she gets a choc button or something, with maybe one for a wee and two for a poo? I need to read those books upstairs now...
Thanks for reading so much, and any advice.
Do it! DD is 2 yrs 2 mo. She started potty training at 18.5mo and was doing reasonably well (initiated by nursery with my full support!) but had ds when she was 19mo and that put the brakes on it totally, only just picking it up again now and wish I'd been able to persist sooner.
Changing 2 lots of nappies is pretty depressing as between that and breakfast, lunch and dinner seems like there's little else(!).
If she's verbal and interested it should help, gentle bribery won't go amiss either (I have started using cbeebies for the morning potty sesh).
Thank you, ishop - I lost confidence last weekend (ok was a wuss!) but partly because her daddy away for so long and missing him and wanted stability. I have a long w/e coming up in Feb and cM has offered to do rest of week (she's v experienced) so will take heart from your encouragement
We are doing potty before bath still with 50pc success but main point is to accustom her to it. Will intro mornings soon too.
Really appreciate your advice. And congrats in two
Long ago , when DD was 2 years and 1 day old , we started potty training .
It took 3 days , bribed by chocolate buttons .
DS was older ( and the oldest , dd was born when he was 2 years and 3 months ) he was potty trained at 2 years 4 months , again bribed by chocolate buttons .
2 lots of nappies to change is awful , you have a tiny cute new born bum and a whopping great toddler arse .
My babies are doing GCSE and A levels now !
doilook <getting coat and heading to shops for monster pack of choc buttons>
Thank you. I'm guessing your DCs have now learned to use loo without being bribes with choc buttons
Still can't work out how we will move I non bribe potty use but as with almost everything else about being a mum, somehow DD an I have worked it out when the time was right and she is a generally happy, helpful soul.
Thank you for the encouragement. Just what I needed
Oh yes !
Bribes get bigger as they get older .
Muum , if I pass all my GCSE , can I go skiing with the school , it's only £490 ?
Stickers work too. Dc1 got a little sticker for a wee and a big sticker for a poo. Went on a piece of paper on the wall so easy to see how he was getting in. I used chocolate buttons for dc2 as stickers just weren't enough.
Good luck and make sure you have lots of cheap pants.
