Potty training

Nappies when going out, or not?

We've been potty training for about 2.5 weeks now with a fait bit of success (sometimes feels like two steps forward and three steps back, but overall she's improving). But I've been putting her in nappies when we go out as we've had quite a few visitors recently and just haven't been able to stay in the house for days on end. And I think it's confusing her; every time she's spent half a day or so in a nappy she ends up having accidents afterwards (just wees; she's doing really well with poos). Would I be better to just go cold turkey on the nappies (apart from nighttime and naptime) and accept that I'm going to have to change her clothes the first few times we go out? We did try a nappy-free day last week and we went through 3 changes of clothes in about an hour, but we were visiting a friend and I think the change of routine/scenery may have confused things.

Has anyone else had a similar experience, and did giving up nappies altogether make a difference? Any advice much appreciated.

Do you have a potty you can take with you? I keep one in the car so I can take it into friends' houses or plonk her on it in supermarket car parks etc. Works well and DD's always been dry.

Whenever I was seriously potty training (eg all day at home wihtout nappies) I wouldnt put nappies on them going out. Just hold them on toilets when out.

We've bought one of these and DS absolutely loves it, he likes to carry it around and is happy sitting on it every 45 minutes or so wherever we are.

She's not keen to sit on a 'big' toilet but I do have a travel potty. The trouble is that when we're out I think she's often too distracted to realise she needs to go. But maybe she needs to actually have a few accidents for that feeling to 'click', and I wonder if a nappy is getting in the way of that.

My Mum thinks that there's no rush to get her completely out of nappies but I think having her in nappies some of the time is just setting her back and confusing her.

I would drop the nappies completely as I agree, it's probably confusing. Can you postpone your major outings/visits etc for a couple of weeks so she has time to get a bit more used to it all?

Definitely no nappies. Bribe her to go before you go out and while you are out, without waiting for her to say. Thats what I did.

I would say no nappies at all. Otherwise it is confusing when I potty trained ds we had about three days of accidents when out then it clicked, also good practice knowing that they have to wait a minute until you can find a toilet. .

You def need to ditch the nappies for everything except nap/sleep time. Did this with both DDs and both were potty trained at around 25 months. It must be very confusing for your DD if it's ok to wee/poo herself sometimes (i.e when you're out and she's in a nappy), but not at other times.

As someone else said, get a Potette and use it - they're great! Also, so what if she has a few accidents while you're out. It really doesn't matter and it's how they learn. Good luck!
