I thought DS had cracked it... He Had all poos and wees in the loo or potty within a week with a few accidents extending us to 10 days potty training. Then a good three weeks dry. I want to know, have others experienced a regression in their child after they have clearly learnt the signs of needing to go or could it be a little bit more? We have now had 6 days of going backwards.

Here comes the long bit of the post.. Feel free to ignore, But here's some background to what's happenned to make me ask

Last Tuesday night he climbed into his cot naked after his bath and split the skin at the base of his penis, and whilst every other morning he'd woken up with a dry nappy, Wednesday morning's was soaked. Just a coincidence I thought (HV agreed, I saw her that morning about DD, 4months old), but when I picked him up from his 3 hrs at nursery in the morning they had him in a pull up as he'd had 2 accidents and I'd only put one spare outfit in his bag (hadn't needed to use any spare outfits for the three weeks leading up to it so had no reason to put in two). They did tell me he was a bit confused in a pull up (too right! Would have preferred him naked) and I swapped him right back to pants as soon as we got home. He had his nap but when got him and he'd wet the bed (never done previously). Then he had another accident in the afternoon. Then more of the same the next day when DH had him. The day after (friday) he had one more accident and I thought i saw it looking pinker than normal at the end of his penis so ended up taking him to see the docs thinking he has an infection perhaps? Docs said he couldn't find an infection in the sample I took but out him on antibiotics anyway.

He was ok on Saturday as I went back to telling him to go to the loo, so I thought we were over a little blip. Sunday all ok except he was wet again after his nap. In fact I then got remiss about giving the antibiotics because figured the doc was right about no infection. But today he's had four accidents, one during tea where I didn't even realise he'd wet himself till I took him out of his high chair.

Anyone got any ideas?

Firstly, a course of antibiotics should always be taken until it is all finished, I'm presuming it should have been 7 full days. You don't just stop them because you think they aren't doing anything. As you have already stopped the medicine, do not re-start it unless the GP prescribes another course. Did the GP swab the wound for any bugs, or thrush?

Secondly, something like an injury can set a DC back in their training, as well as an infection. It doesn't seem as if he has just become bored and can't be bothered as happens with some DC.

I think going back a step or two in the training might help, where you take him to the loo at set times and keep this up for a few days at least, so that he is having some success, and ask nursery if they will go back to reminding him too. Take him to the loo there as soon as you arrive, and again on going home unless the staff tell you he has just been. It's all about encouraging the positive i.e. staying clean and dry and using the potty/toilet. Do continue with a nappy for sleep times.
