Potty training

Night Wee's

I have a 2.5yr old DD who has been properly potty training for a week now (previously just using the loo in conjuction with pull ups with no pressure etc).

First day she had 4 accidents, but has been totally dry and clean since, all prompted by her (so no need to ask every 15 mins if she needs the loo) so as you can imagine I am thrilled.

The problem I have however is that she still has a nappy for the night, but has started calling out (1.30am one night, 3am last night) asking for a wee, and won't be persuaded to just use the nappy. I have a 3 month old DD who is still night feeding, and we all have colds, so between all of that I am getting hardly any sleep. Any tips to stop the night waking for wee's? Or is it just part of the toilet training package and something I need to ride out?

Unfortunately, with girls it does seem that once they are dry, they really are dry and if she is waking to wee in the night, then you are unlikely to persuade her to wee her nappy consciously. My DD went from nappies to being completely dry in the day in the same very short time frame that you describe.

Since she is only 2.5, I assume taking herself to the toilet is not an option in the middle of the night yet? Any possibility of a potty on a mat near her bed instead? I know a friend who did this, so it meant her DD didn't need to traipse out of her room etc at night.

You may find this phase of waking for a wee is quite short - certainly with my DD, once she was dry at day, I found that within a couple of weeks her night time pull up was almost always dry in the morning.

We never had the "wake for a wee" phase you describe, so clearly in the early weeks there were occasions when she was still weeing at night, in her sleep, unaware, when we had the occasional wet pull up in the morning.

She was fully dry at night (7pm-7am) really quite quickly after that.

Good luck.

I would say potty on a (washable) rug (for inevitable spills), in the bedroom. Talk her through it during the day then stickers for everynight she uses it without disturbing you, maybe a torch or child friendly bedside light. We use pull ups at night which help give independence.

we never did a potty in the bedroom - didnt want the possibility of wee all over the floor. If they woke for a wee in the night we took them to the toilet.
