Potty training

2.2 too young?

DD stayed with MIL for a few nights this week whilst me and DH had some very early starts and very late finishes at work this week, and as always, she had her running round with no nappy on and going to the toilet (seems to be obsessed with it!) She was dry whilst we were there (3 hours), put a nappy on her for the ride home and then when we got home, took it off until bed time and she stayed dry with the help of a million toilet trips. Back on for bed, and off again this morning until nap time this afternoon. Only 1 accident today.

Thing is, it seems to be a bit of a game... she is asking to go to the toilet every 5 minutes, and then wants to wipe her bits and wash her hands which she loves doing, so I think she is asking to go just to do that. I'd say about 1 time out of 8 she manages a wee. I don't want to not take her though in case she really needs to go and has an accident which upsets her.

So I'm left wondering whether I should back down and wait a few months until she understands more and has more bladder control, or whether I should just see it through now that I (well MIL) have started.

What would you do? :S

It sounds like she's doing really well.
They all enjoy going to the loo in the beginning. It's a novelty and it makes them feel big like mummy and daddy.
That novelty soon wears off and she'll go less often as she becomes more aware of her own body and when she genuinely needs to go.
As she's doing so well, I'd carry on and see where it leads. You may well have a potty trained toddler on your hands in a short time.
Good luck!

No it's not too young. And there is nothing wrong with it being a game.

Accidents are normal, and don't worry about them upsetting her - just say 'never mind, next time in the potty' or something like that.

Thanks for the replies :) she has done fantastically this afternoon. I put her potty in the lounge to save the millions of trips to the toilet, and she loved it. Stopped asking, and just took herself whenever she needed to go and I wiped her/emptied it afterwards. No messing about this time. She was not at all happy about putting a nappy back on for bed though! I'll keep going I think!

Definitely not too young - DS was about 2.2 when we did potty training properly and tbh could have done it sooner but DD born when DS was 22 months and I chickened out a bit Grin.

DD was 19 months when she decided she didn't want to wear nappies any more. That worked as well although if I were doing it again I possibly would have tried to dissuade her a bit more.

It could be that she is ready to not wear a nappy at night as well - some children do both at once and can be ready to go through the night very early.

definitely not too young. DS was 2 days after his second birthday when he declared 'no more nappies'. we never looked back. DD was a bit older but did it in an afternoon basically!

Not too young if they are showing all the classic signs and able to be a bit independent with it all too.

DD was 24 months when she was PTd. She decided herself she didn't want to wear a nappy as she feeling a bit sore. So she didn't. Within 3 days she was dry and we didn't really have any accidents after the first day and then not many.

Definitely not to young DD was 21 or 22 months when she was potty trained. Even better if she's having fun with it, some kids find it really intimidating!
