Potty training

Is DS ready to start potty training?

My son is 2.2 yrs old.

I have bought him a potty and a seat which goes over the toilet. He is showing mild interest in each, has tried sitting on seat on toilet a couple of times [not done wee or poo though] and enjoys watching me put his favourite stuffed toy Monkey on the potty so as to begin "potty training" Monkey.

We have also been reading potty training children's stories to him. His favourite one is Nappy Duck & Potty Pig and he asks for this to be read to him a few times a day. So it seems like he is interested in the idea of the potty...

However DS never tells us when he is doing a poo or a wee. It seems as if he is unaware of when he is doing/has done them. Although he looks with interest when he is doing a wee in the bath...

We have tried to get him to sit on the potty "like Nappy Duck and Potty Pig" but he runs away and says no.

Anyway, my question is should I persevere with potty training at this point or wait until he seems more aware of when he is pooing or weeing or shows me more interest in using the potty or a dislike in having dirty nappy?

Any advice much appreciated!!!

No, he doesn't sound ready. He needs to have recognition of when he has done a wee as a first step, and it will be much easier if he wants to be potty trained. It doesn't sound as if you've got to either of those points yet. He is young, just give it some more time.

Thanks alarkaspree.

That was my sense of it, that if he is resistant to using the potty there is no point pushing him into it at this stage. I don't want to give him a phobia about it!

I'd leave it a while. I started potty training ds today as he could go a few hours without a nappy on then would ask for one on and wee or poo immediately, so I knew he knew he needed it. HTH Smile

Thanks! I'm thinking of trialling him without a nappy soon...
