Potty training

First day of potty training my first DC. DD is 2.8.

We have had a potty and toilet seat for her from about age 2 which she has got used to sitting on but she has been reluctant to pee in the potty.

She likes her pants. She had one accident at 11.15 but has not had a pee since. It has confirmed that she has the bladder control to train but she is so wilful and for some reason won't pee on the potty or loo. I've been careful not to put on pressure, I've just explained that we are swapping nappies for pants and we will try and pee/poo in the potty. I made no fuss after her accident just cleared up and said never mind next time we'll try and do it in the potty.

I am worried about the length of time since she last pee'd. She is obviously holding it in. I've made sure she has been drinking plenty of water so she would need to go. I asked if she wanted to put on a nappy and she said no but she won't use the potty. Should I forget about potty training for now or carry on for a couple more days and see how she goes?

Well I guess she's weed since you posted this! DS1 was very reticent too in the beginning (he still can be from time to time). Its a good sign that your DD can hold on to wee for so long but I know that feeling that if they don't go soon they are more likely to have an accident! To help getting used to going regularly it helped DS1 that I put on a funny reminder sound on my phone (a quacking duck, or train or motorbike!) and then when we heard the sound, we'd run to the bathroom. It got better really quickly though, within 2 weeks he was taking himself off to the loo. It sounds like you're doing all the right things - good luck!

Yes, she did in the end after holding on for about six hours. But not in the potty, she is just weeing on the carpet (which I'm not reacting to btw, just clearing up and reassuring). I don't know why she won't use the potty; I think she realises she has to go before she does so less a forgetting to go and more a refusal of the potty.

For how many more days should I persevere if she continues to refuse to use the loo/potty? I don't know whether to abandon it and come back to it in a few weeks; I don't want it to become a battle of wills. On the other hand, we have been sitting her on the potty for 8 months now and she has never once done a wee in it so if we leave it for a few weeks and try again I'm not sure the result will be an different.
