6 week check

My boy was 8 weeks old on Saturday. We were in my sisters yesterday and my mum asked if I’d had my 6 week check up. I wasn’t aware that I should have. Should I, or the boy, have gone for a checkup? I’ve not seen the HV for about 3 weeks now. I have tried phoning her but no answer. Not sure whether I should just phone up Drs and ask. We are next booked to see HV on 13th December which is to go over what I should expect for his first set of injections.

Op, I would ring and check. The 6 wk checks are important and they not only check how you are healing and feeling etc but also check baby is gaining weight and doing well etc . I took both of mine more for peace of mind if anything. Wouldn't harm to ring HV, mention you are going in on 13th and see if they are happy to wait until then or want you in sooner.

For both of mine, coming home from hospital has triggered a fork to register them with my local GP practice. On returning the forms I’ve had an appointment generated for the 6wk check. Have you registered your baby with the GP practice yet?

My GPs only do a six week check for babies which I had to ring and book; if I had any issues they would have made me an appointment but as I didn’t have any issues I didn’t have one.

Congratulations.

Gps round here seem to do them with the 8 week jabs. Ours is at 9 weeks! However the letter came through at 5 weeks so if you've not heard I would give them a call. I heard the hospital say some surgeries expect you to book them yourself.

I had a 6 week checkup that was for me, and an 8 week checkup combined with the jabs for my LO.

I had a 6 week check seperate from baby with the practice nurse who didnt even check me over - just blood pressure. Then gave me a leaflet for a kiddie book club. All very pointless.

If you have no issues so far then you probably aren't missing anything.

Our 6 week check up (last week at 8 weeks!) was done separately from the first set of injections and carried out by a GP rather than a nurse. Baby had her eyes/joints/ears checked out similarly to the checks they did before the hospital discharged after birth, and I was asked about my mood and if I wanted any contraception prescribing.

I got a letter from the surgery after I registered her as a patient about the check and also one, more of a reminder one, from the local NHS trust telling us where the appointment should be and after which date. I’d maybe ring your GP’s up to see if they do them and if you should have had one Smile

You should have seen both the HV and GP for you and baby at 6 weeks. The GP will do a physical examination of baby checking their head, spine, soft palet etc. The HV will do weight, length and head measurements. Make a GP appointment and tell them it's the 6 week check as they'll make it a double apt. If you don't hear from the HV go to one of the baby weigh in clinics in your area.

Thanks for the replies. I've seen the HV and she has booked us to go this week to get his first injections and for him to get looked over by the GP. She said GP would check things like his hips, eyes, testes etc. No mention of checking me out, but not too bothered about that. He's 9 weeks old, but was 3 weeks early so wondering if that is why HV was so late arranging his check up or if round here they just wait until their first jabs and kill two birds with one stone so to speak. The appointment came through the post, but she told me beforehand in person.
