Is this mastitis??

I have a 9 week old baby who generally feeds every 2-3 hours through the night. On Wednesday he went for six hours and I woke up with very engorged breasts. But I felt fine. By 11am on Thursday I had a cracking headache, achey joints and very slight temperature. My left breast was sore, but no redness and baby happy to feed from that side. Feeding was initially painful yesterday but has been ok today although the breast is still sore. Today I have a temperature of 40.3 and feel absolutely dreadful. I'm loathe to take antibiotics as they always make me ill and I'm worried about both of us getting thrush. Is this even mastitis or just a virus which happened to coincide with engorged breasts?!

It sounds like the flu like symptoms of mastisis, but I'm surprised you don't have any redness or pain. When I had it it felt like something was pulling my breast down, and there was a clear lump and red flare.

It does sound like mastitis. I had the same symptoms, headache, feeling sick, I generally felt unbelievably rough. I only had a tiny red patch too but feeding did get very sore but not for the first 24-48 hrs. The awful feeling came much before the redness. I didn't need antibiotics thankfully. I developed it Friday and put hot water bottles on my breasts, Savoy cabbage leaves and other googled cures and then spent all of my awake time encouraging my dd to latch on and drain the blocked duct. By the time I made it to the dr on the Monday my symptoms were a bit better and she prescribed antibiotics but I put off taking them (after promising the dr that if I wasn't continuing to improve within the next 24 hours then I'd take them) and eventually didn't need to.

Forgot to say congrats on your baby and hope you feel better soon. Also, it could be worth ringing LLL or asking a pharmacist.

I had this 3 times, tips are;
Change bf positions, even try on all fours and gently massage towards nipped while bf to ease blockage.
Hot and cold remedies as mentioned
Check latch
Goodluck x
