October '04 babies - anyone fancy a kip?!!

I certainly do. Bean is becoming more and more unsettled in the night as the weeks go by and it is taking its toll. Florence, you have my utmost admiration for still being alive, let alone managing a trip to NZ!! Hope its going well.

Bean is 3 months tomorrow, and people are already asking me if I am going to start weaning him soon? I would like to keep bf until he is 6 months, but how do I know if he needs to start sooner? Or will I know that is a stupid question when I have a permanently hungry baby on my hands?!!
What is everyone else planning to do?

Btw, am reading a marvellous, marvellous book called "What Mothers Do (especially when it looks like nothing)" by Naomi Stadlen. It talks about what a shock it all is, what we provide for a our babies and crucially, what I find missing from so many other books, how we actually feel - exhausted, sometimes angry towards db, unsure of ourselves etc etc. It does not tell me what I "should" be doing - hurrah!!! Cannot recommend it highly enough. Is doing me the world of good and we like that.

Ach, sorry it's all gone pear-shaped Beansprout. Would like to read your book, sounds good.

Florence, well done for doing your packing, must be a huge load off your mind.

I am aming to bf until dd2 is 6 months to reduce risk of allergies, but I know other people have started bacg on the 4 motnhs. With dd1 I waited until she was 5.5 months, but it was difficult as i was in full time work.

Grace is waking up once or twice in the night - so can be tired togther - although she has slept all today - does this bode well for tonight? She tends to go to bed about 11pm but it can be more like 12.30!

I'm aiming for 6 months if I can, lots of allergies in my family too. Seemingly this isn't always possible though as some babies stop putting on enough weight on only bm after 4ish months, there are some interesting threads on this subject that I have read through before (not sure how to locate them and direct you to them ), will see if I can work it out..

Interesting to read the weaning thread Beaker, my only lasting memory of doing this is in the form of a tip: warm ice cube trays underneath with running water, rather than try and gouge the blocks out straight from freezer with a knife. My only Sabatier lost its tip last time.

My mum is here and I should be working. But can hear dd2 and her 'chatting' next door so keep ear-wigging.

This is one of my favorite topics and I know i'm totally biased so don't shoot me down! Wait as long as possible, I have been pressured twice into starting before I wanted too because weight gain levelled off, both experiences were horrible, and I believe that weaning is so over rated as a remedy for sleepless nights. DD finally was weaned at 10 months, by which time she was past the mush stage and I didn't have to bother with all that ice cube malarky. Previously she had refused to have a spoon anywhere near here. There is an idea called baby led weaning which I think basically goes down the finger food route which is what we ended up doing, DD tried bits of what we had until she finally got the idea that food was not the enenmy and progressed onto eating from her own plate with a spoon. Been to hospital today to find out she definately has a milk intolerence which is why she lost weight initially when I stopeed feeding at 6 months - bit late over a year later.
Hearing aid number 2 for ds2 tomorrow so more hospital visits.
Like the sound of the book Bean.
Complete admiration for you working Toots, went to work to say hello this morning, rather glad i'm not going back. Did find a freelance job to apply for but can't find my CV, how feeble an excuse is that!

Yeah, Geogteach, but what I do isn't really 'working' most of the time, hence my being even more available to post!

Is anyone else experiencing very lengthy night time feeds and fairly swift daytime ones? Alex's daytime feeds (bf) are about 15 or 20 minutes long and that seems fine, at night he seems to want to feed for about an hour and a half. Am wondering whether I'm being a human dummy as surely there isn't 45 minutes worth of milk in each boob? Not sure because if I try and take him off he gets very annoyed indeed. Any advice/suggestions very welcome

DS2 would like to know if any of your babies would like to join him in the new olympic sport of pooing in your armpits, I think we've already bagged the gold

Sorry Geogteach, we (dd1) seems to be concentrating on going for a medal in Weeing on the sofa because it's nearly bedtime and if I go upstairs mum might turn Pingu off .

DD2 managed poo just above her belly button today so she might just squeeze through to the next round.

Oh Beaker, it sounds like the dummy thing to me, and knackering to boot. Maybe if you reduced his time bit by bit until it's daytime feed length he'd get the message???? I'm sure there'll be some crying when you put him down (remember crying can be simply looked at as communicating )but in my book one and a half hour night feeds are simply not on.

Thanks for your view on weaning Geogteach, v helpful. When I told someone that ds was 3 months old this week they said "oh, so you'll be weaning him any time now then?" Eh?!! . Will see how it goes.

Beaker2 - how was last night? Agree that 45 mins each side is unlikely. Am trying to stuff Bean to the gills before he sleeps and have been dream feeding him too which seems to help (a bit).

Am under house arrest today as have a stinking cold. After a lot of night feeding in recent days (culminating in 4 feeds on Wednesday night), the Bean came good and only wanted one meal last night which was a huge relief as I was dreading how I would feel today if he was still the hungry hippo I have been dealing with lately. So today I feel pretty grotty but at least I am not too exhausted in the bargain.

Toots - I always wee on the sofa if dp turns Pingu off - an entirely reasonable response I think?

Hi all, my ds is 3.5 months and i dont think he willl be ready for weaning for ages as he hasnt even smiled yet. As i said on my thread ds has had a few problems but now he seems to be great, still waiting for mri scan results though. Ds is feeding 3 hourly after being in hospital yet again, although he went from 12 till 6 yippee!!!!

Beaker2 · 28/01/2005 16:11

Last night better thanks, only 45 mins in total, possibly still too long but I'm counting my blessings. Pardon my ignorance but is 'dreamfeeding' actually feeding when asleep, remaining asleep throughout feed? Or just waking to feed?

Beaker depending on how you feel about dummies could you shove one in when you think he's had enough? Worked for DS1 but DS2 not interested. Wednesday was a bad night here too, up 7 times, but that was between 3 kids

Geogteach - 7 times???? Surely Olympic Gold for you there too

Hi Jbadgirl, hope you get more of them good nights.

Beaker, glad DS only stopped for a light bite last night.

Beansprout - want to know a secret? Only five minutes after bawling dd out, I turned round a bit fast and had a wee in MY pants, and Pingu was nerry to be seen What was it again? P-e-l-v-i-c-f-l-o-o-r-e-x-e-r-c-i-s-e-s, oh yeahhhh.

Feeling cock-a-hoop today. The lovely pre-school near me, which I thought was only sessional, does 9 til 3, and rather freakily they have a place three days a week, so I can move dd1 out of her really not what it was nursery. Also chatted on the phone to a lovely sounding child minder who would have a space for dd2 AND could collect dd1 when I need a longer day. And.... although financially punishing, at least a hundred pounds a month less than I was dreading for the pair!!!!

Sorry to give an anxious shudder to anyone trying not to think about childcare and returning to work. But I do honestly think that when it comes to the wire, the right thing comes along.

Hi all - sounds like you had a bad week Geogteach!
Toots - thanks for the timely reminder about the pelvic floor excersises!
Weaning is something that is a big topic at the moment - It was covered in my post natal group last week, and I have now decided that head in sand is a good way of coping! Also had the dentist come to talk about how to look after teeth - sugar is in everything!! Milk is definatley the safer and I have decided the easiest option for now!

Hi all - great to catch up with everyone.

I´m hope to bf for 6 months. I managed it with dd although had loads of pressure from people to wean earlier as she was such a skinny thing. Ds is a real chubster so I´m sure I´ll get pressure this time round because people will think he can´t possibly be satisfied with milk alone. You just can´t win sometimes .

We´ve just got back from a week in Lanzarote which would of been great if both the kids had been ill. DD - cough and stomach bug, ds - virus with wheezing. Needless to say we didn´t get much sleep, but it was still great to get a bit of sunshine at this time of year.

Just popping in to say hello! The trip to Brisbane was nightmare material, not helped by lots of confusion over our flights (baby booked on a separate flight, DS and I not booked on one particular leg at all!) and lots of waiting around at airport desks. DS currently in major rat mode due, I think, mainly to changing time zones and sleep deprivation, while DD is completely unsettled - whinges after being up for half an hour and is wide awake from 4am at night...Anyway we have survived and hopefully things can only get better - 30C here yesterday and we were swimming in the pool while DD slept.

hugs to all

Oh dear Florence - not what you need - mind you I bet dd and ds have settled into the warm climate and you have forgotten the nightmare! .

Been to my postnatal group this morning - baby massage which was great, but now dd is all out of routine with her sleep and now have a very grumpy baby! Thought she'd settled down but off we go again......!

Glad everyone is ok(ish). Florence - sounds like you deserve every one of those 30 degrees!
Jbadgirl - welcome. I haven't seen your thread so was not aware of ds's scan. Please let us know where it is so we can be up to date? Hope everything is ok with you.

Off to see a potential childminder tomorrow (gulp). Am very churned up over the prospect of returning to work (which is not for a good while yet ffs) so have bitten the bullet and called a few. Yuck. Any tips/good questions to ask, gratefully received.

Still have this cold, which has been a real hoot, but did go to the flicks to day with me Bean. We saw Bridget Jones which was pretty dire but Colin Firth was worth every yummy penny of the entrance fee...

Oh bean - can't believe that you are looking at childminders already - it only seems 2 minutes since we were moaning about still being pregnant when our due dates had past!
DD loves the cinema too and sits transfixed at the screen for about an hour before becoming bored - which means I get to see the first half of the movie!

jbadgirl, sorry to hear that. keep us posted with any mri scan news.

beansprout, i too am a huge colin firth fan. if you can be bothered check out this site \link{www.firthfrenzy.com} - with sound is good!

ds massively improved on the eating in the night/sleeping front so am feeling pretty perky today (although my trip to work yesterday put the dampeners on things. how i do not want to go back...)
