Good luck PPS with persauding Seren that bottles are as nice as mummy! I had battles with DS over this and even thought that's over 2 years ago I still remember it being awful and involved too many tears! In the end he won, and the only way he'd take milk other than from my boobs was with a tommee tippee hard-spouted cups. I seriously hope Seren manages to take it without too many tears. I started Mairi on the bottle at 7 weeks old and she's had one everyday since then, and although initially she had EBM she's been having formula in that one bottle since 3 months and is fine with it (in fact I think she sometimes gets annoyed BFing as it's harder work than the bottle).

Love the photos too, beautiful smiles

Mairi has the cold and is miserable, plus had to change her ABs so her tummy's a little upset... Might have to resort to snot-sucking soon (via a tube...not directly I promise!). But I can't complain too much as the past 4 nights she has slept through (anything between 8 and 10.5 hrs in one stretch- woohoo!!) Although i now feel more tired than ever?!

Hugs to all xxx

Hello All

Well.... Shes taking the bottle! Woo hoo!! Was a bit horrible this morning as she was screaming cos she was hungry and wouldn't feed but we persevered and shes taking it! In fact, an hour and a half ago we gave her 3.5oz (I know it doesn't sound much but she has been getting bored and stopping after about 3 and now we've just given her 4 and had to warm another 4 up cos she drained it! Bless her. Now I need to do some serious expressing....

MMN Poor Mairi with her cold- they look so poorly with their streaming eyes and runny noses. Hope she gets better soon. Karvol do plug in vapour things which might help at night. Well done with the sleeping though- thats fab!

Justabout- I wonder how long it will take us to fill this one up!

Well done PPS, it's so good to have the flexibility to bottle and breast feed, I think, although I seem to end up giving DS his daily bottle anyway!

MMN, Ben has had a really bad cold too (streaming eyes, bad cough), but we also noticed an improvement in his sleep. The last 2 or 3 nights, he's had his "dreamfeed" around 11 and then stirred around 5.45, when we put his dummy in and reswaddle, and then he sleeps til around 7. This is the best ever! We think that he also has chicken pox, poor thing, but at least we feel better after unbroken sleep! Oh, and his bum is red likes a baboon's, so he's not having a fun time, but we did get some smiles out of him today so he must be feeling better.

Hi all, I'm just trying to catch up. I;ve not been around for a while as I've been ill with a fluey cold type thing... Not proper flu, I've had that and now tend to rant at people who say they have flu when they've got a bad cold.
I did spend a couple of days in bed in the hope I'd avoid passing on my germs, but Bryher still caught it. We've had a few miserable days and she's still got a chesty cough.

Sounds like we're not the only ones though so hope everyone else starts feeling better soon.

We've been introducing Bryher to the bottle too. My Dad is going in to have his heart valve repaired/replaced next week so I'm trying to get a couple of days worth of milk expressed so I can be with my Mum on the day and have some more milk saved as back up.
We gave Bryher her first bottle today and thankfully she took to it well. She downed 4oz in a matter of minutes then I had to top her up. She's obviously good at hitting the bottle... I wonder where she gets that from?

I think she;s probably taking 6oz per feed. Does that sound about right? I've only been able to express 4oz at a time and I don't want to push it as I don't want my milk supply to increase too much.

Hi Myfairone. I did the really harsh thing (don't know if you read) where I offered her the bottle and if she refused it I tried again an hour later. Over the course of the whole morning she only took about 4 oz but by the afternoon she was scoffing loads. 3 days later (today) she gets really excited when she sees her bottle!!!! Have you tried getting you DH to give baby bottle? or a sleepfeed? They are the only things I can think of really unless you do what I did.
The only trouble I have found is that on Sun I only expressed twice and she had bottles all the day and my milk has already really slowed down. Today they just don't seem to be filling up and I've managed to get 2 bottles of 4oz all day (usually they fill up really big and hard and I could get 7oz at a time- Sorry if TMI) Don't really know what to do- any suggestions for that?
Pulapula- poor you if Ben has chicken pox. Must be a nightmare.

Pulapula- have you tried Metanium ointment for sore botties? I find this by far the best nappy rash cream ever, and trust me I've tried a lot (DD is very prone to it because she has oral enzymes due to her CF). Really hope Ben doesn't have chiken pox, bless him, and hope he's on the mend if he does...

Myfairone- my DS was just like yours. I agree with PPS if you can hack it just keep trying. Eventually they do 'give in'. It is easier if someone other you offers the bottle (and you're out of sight), and sometimes if the milk is definitely blood temp makes it more appetising. Which bottles are you trying? A lot of people swear by the Tommee Tippee "Closer to Nature" bottles for swapping between BFing. I am weak and after a very stubborn DS refused to take a bottle (after repeated trying by my poor MIL..who was also in tears after a couple of hours) and seemed to not have run out of energy for screaming the house down I gave up. We then went and bought every type of bottle teat, soft-spouted cup etc. on the market in a bid to get him to take something other than my boobs!! But still to no avail... In the end (think I've mentioned this before so sorry for sounding like a stuck record) DS went on to hard-spouted tommee tippee cups. He didn't take much milk from these at first so when I went back to work (he was 7 months old) he would have my EBM given to him by spoon or syringe...and a little by cup, and would survive on that between 9 & 5 and then have mega BFs all eve, all night and early morn!! He finally self-weaned at just under 11 months on to a cup. Having had a lot of stress with all that (nursery were horrified he wouldn't take a bottle!!) I started DD early on a bottle this time, as I do need to be able to leave her with someone else occasionally... It is very stressful...thinking of you lots xxx

PPS- even one day of feeding less can have a massive knock-on effect on your milk supply... I suggest letting her suckle as often as she like and limit the bottle feeding to just once a day, or try expressing frequently (up to every 2hrs, for up to 20mins at a time) & double-expressing if you have a double pump... In a couple of days your milk supply should bounce back. If that doesn't seem to work try Fenugreek herbal supplement (from good health food shops) as it's meant to help milk supply. I'm sure my milk supply is up & down all the time as some days DD feeds constantly & other days she really seems to not need much and I walk about feeling painfully full!! Just go with whatever she demands!

xx

Pulapula- meant to say Metanium ointment is available in most chemists or Boots etc. I think some large supermarkets stock it now too. You'll find a little goes a long way though.

Bilblio- hope everything goes ok with your Dad's operation, that must be a real worry... Glad you are better too finally. 6oz per feed sounds about right, although my DD is a guzzler and will take 8.5oz in about 15 mins from a bottle!! And as she BFs for over an hour at a go I think she takes that at each feed from me too!! But she is very hungry, most babies don't take that much in one go....

MMN,

Thanks for the advice- the nappy rash has gone after some good nappy free time and a dose of metanium- amazing stuff.

Bilblio- my LO takes 8oz bottles just before bed, and we usually give 6oz bottles otherwise. I never know whether to offer more as he always finishes his bottles...

PPS- I have used Fenugreek a few times (when I wasn't expressing enough to do bottle feeds) and it worked for me- within a day or two I had full boobs again. The advice I have is not to take too many, and to stop once you feel you've reached the required level, as you don't want to get engorged. I bought it at Holland and Barrett.

It does look like Ben has chicken pox, but only has about 10 spots, and seems much happier now so was more grumpy before the spots appeared. So hopefully its just a mild dose, but should I assume be enough so he doesn't get it again. Unfortunately the sleeping through whilst he was ill hasn't lasted and he has been disturbing us in the night again. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

MMN- Thanks for the advise RE getting milk suppy back up. Will try that over night (easier then trying to do it in the day).

Bilblio- Good luck to your dad for next week. Also glad your LO took to the bottle so well!

Went to see the HV today to get weighed and as Seren had only put about 20g on in a week the HV told me to start weaning her. She is 17 weeks tomorrow!! What do you think about that? Has anyone started weaning yet?

Pula- hope Ben gets better soon! Hes been really lucky if this mild case is enough for him to not have it again! Also, can you imagine trying to tell a toddler not to scratch their scabs?!

hi all haven't been on for ages again ()had to read the last thread before catching up with this one) PPS I had Lydia weighed today she's 18 weeks and 5.4kg (the 2 to 9th centile) but she continuing to gain slowly no one has mentioned early weaning again (it was broached at the start because of her cf) has your LO been ill ?as if so they could well be using all the calories to fight the infection

traditionally babies were weaned at 4 months the advice changed about 2 years ago your hv could be a bit 'old school'

will catch up properly soon as application of boobies is required!!!

Hi Doris, Serens weight is about the same- she is 5.3kg at 17 weeks. Shes not been ill but I think that over the last few days where I have introduced the bottle she hasn't been eating as much so maybe that was what the prob was. I have decided to start weaning her but very slowly, and use the food as an addition to all her normal feeds.

Hope Lydia is well. X

PPS- I think 17 weeks is ok for weaning as long as its done slowly, although the guidance is to wait til 26 weeks. Ben seems to be gaining weight and quite satisfied on just 5 feeds a day but if he starts to demand more and wake in the night, then i would consider weaning- he's 20 weeks now. I've already started my puree collection in the freezer- apple and potato prepared so far!. Must get some sleep now! Goodnight

Haven't posted for ages. Just checking to see eveyone is ok. James is doing fine. He weighs 15lbs (He is only 14 weeks is this ok)

DD has just got her first wobbly tooth at the grand age of 4. (5 next month)She is very pleased with herself but I feel sad as she is growing up so fast. Maybe the time of the month is coming on - hence the sentimental soppy stuff

Evening all, thank you for the advice about the bottle feeding. The problem I have is that I love breastfeeding but feel I should try and get him to at least take a bottle because Im going back to work in January....

On that note,is anyone else thats returning to work getting really tearful about it? I just cannot get my head around leaving him. I never thought i would feel like this. Its really getting me down and I have taken to continuously counting how long I have...Im almost dreading Christmas because its closer to January....am I sounding crazy? Having Lo has turned me into a snivelling emotional wreck where I used to be so strong!

Had my LO weighed yesterday and he is 12lb 3oz at 16 weeks.
Twoplusone, WOW! at the growth spurt!

PPS good luck with getting the milk supply up.

Bilblio - Good luck to your father.

NIte all.

hello all, hope everyone had a good weekend. We went to see the in-laws, they have only seen Rufus twice since he's been born. They just loved him, it was great. Shame they are a three hour drive away otherwise I am sure they'd do all the babysitting I'd like. I had a couple of line ins - heaven.

Quick question..........Aunty Fanny....I just had my second one since giving birth and it was awful. No pain but LOADS of blood. Much much more than there used to be. I felt faint for three days. Anyone else had a similar experience? I seem to recall someone mentioning it but couldn't find it on the thread.

Ds just had his first formula coming home in the car. I am going to introduce a formula bottle I think, after being inspired by people's success stories.

2+1 - I hope you have a great time with your dp.
