Start using Mumsnet PremiumNewborn not back to birth weight 2 weeks
(7 Posts)So my newborn was a big baby born 9lbs 6, she's 2 weeks old and is still 9lbs. She lost 9% of her birth weight and is gaining but I'm concerned as I read that the vast majority of babies are back to their birth weight at 2 weeks. The midwife isn't concerned as she is gaining although it's slow and is coming back to weigh her at 3 weeks. I'm doing combination feeding and never let her go over 3 hours between feeds and then when she cries before then I always feed her so on average she is feeding every 2-3 hours. She feeds for at least 45 mins on breast and then I top up with formula.
Has anyone else experienced their baby not being back to their birth weight by 2 weeks or is this really unusual? I did read somewhere that some babies who are big born aren't genetically designed to be that big and they may be getting back to the weight that they're designed to be, any advice would be great
I think the average wiz the be back to birth weight by 2 weeks. But my midwife said for babies born heavier this isn’t always the case as they obviously have more to gain to get back if that makes sense.
@Caspianberg thanks! She was also born by c section so maybe held more fluids when she was born. I just found an old thread where other people experienced this with big babies too
I had a big c-section baby and it took her a good few weeks to get back to birth weight. If midwife / HV isn’t concerned then you shouldn’t be either, she’s probably fine
I had a c section and my DS was almost 7 weeks by the time he was back to "birth weight" and I use quotation marks because I'm not convinced his birth weight was accurate
3 of my dc were 10lb plus babies and all of them took about 5/6 weeks till they regained their birth weight. My HV and midwife were unconcerned and they are all fit and healthy over 5s now.
Thanks for the replies! I'm a first time mother and finding it hard not to worry but this has reassured me
