Can I have 1 glass of red wine!

So my baby is 4.5 months old. Im exclusively breastfeeding and just felt like a glass of red wine. I've e never drank whilst breastfeeding my other children and I probably sound terrible but just want a glass of wine to distress. Will only one glass do any harm?

Nope. You’re fine to have a glass of wine if you like.

Our NCT lady said the best time to have one is actually when you’re actually breastfeeding as it won’t be in the milk as won’t have got through your system iyswim

You could have the bottle if you wanted to. Baby would be fine. You're head might not be in the morning though ! Breast feeding really shouldn't restrict you doing anything!

No reason to restrict your alcohol at all - if you’re sober enough to look after the baby it’s all good. Obviously no bed sharing after drinking though. Theoretically you could get absolutely smashed and so long as you had someone else there to look after the baby in between feeds it would be fine!

It's absolutely fine to have a drink while breastfeeding. This post: m.facebook.com/DrJackNewman/posts/422431411241244 from Dr Jack Newman - widely considered an authority on breastfeeding - details the chemistry behind it but the short version is that the concentration of alcohol in your milk shortly after drinking 2 units of alcohol is the equivalent of mixing a shot in 70 litres of mixer. Say a baby drinks 150ml during a feed, at that concentration they're going to get less than a drop of alcohol in the milk. 2 hours after drinking 2 units, the alcohol had completely disappeared from the milk.
So relax and enjoy!

Drinking alcohol when breastfeeding is a very different beast to drinking alcohol when pregnant.

When you are pregnant the foetus is being exposed to the same level of alcohol as you are. Scary stuff. This is not true of breastmilk. Your body processes the alcohol before it enters your breastmilk. Your breastmilk alcohol level is always equal to your blood alcohol level (hence why the "pump and dump" strategy is pointless). The drink drive limit in the UK is .08. A blood alcohol level of .5 would be lethal. In fact, a blood alcohol level of even .2 might be lethal.

In other words, if you drank so much alcohol tonight that you literally drank yourself to death, your breastmilk would still only contain about the same amount of alcohol as some supermarket fruit juice that had been sitting out for an hour.

Go ahead and enjoy your wine totally guilt free. You deserve it ☺️
