Breastfeeding mums!

Hi everyone,

I currently have a 3 week old who I'm trying to breastfeed however I'm really struggling with my supply. My supply was hindered after birth because my son had a tongue tie which the NHS passed off as nothing but when I went to get a second opinion the clinician was shocked that his tongue tie was left! He had 80 percent tongue tie so he was struggling to stay latched on and it was really painful when I would be breastfeeding him; anyways, he's sorted now but I feel that because I had issues with breastfeeding at the start I just feel I'm not supplying him enough and after being on the breast he always needs a top up.
Is there anything I can do to boost up my supply?!
Thank you in advance ♥️💓

Just keep feeding on demand, and really just as much as you can outside of that too! Your supply should eventually catch up Flowers

What makes you think he needs a top up after OP? Is he not settling? Being on the breast frequently is how he’s going to increase your supply.

You could also pump after each feed and cup feed him (if you are worried about confusing him with bottle teet). I had to do this with my LG now 2.

Hi it took me 4 weeks for my milk to come in my baby is almost 5wks now.i did pump inbetween to get my supply up but i found just constant feeding my baby even if she was just using it as comfort got my milk up, through the night is the best time to try and do this even if u pump after a feed i got told by my health visitor. Also the more u feed & pump your body with produce the milk. Drink & eat well will help.
I know its hard but keep going dont give up,i found it hard to start even now i still at times find it hard but its such a good way to bond & with winter here your protecting your baby.
If u need advice your health visitor can help u & maybe tell u about breast feeding groups etc.x

Hi, firstly congratulations on your lo. There's some supplements out there that might help, fenugreek from Holland & Barrett, and/or nursing tea. Try to eat lots and lots of green veg. I used to make cookies from Brewers Yeast (bought on amazon) and they really worked for me, alongside using a Hakaa pump to catch let-down whilst feeding on one side. I personally didn't find electric pumps useful but you could so worth a go. I had a lactation consultation and she suggested bf in the bath to help boost oxytocin too. Hope some of that helps!

The more you feed the more milk will be produced. Feed more often for longer for a few days to boost supply. Topping up in early stages can reduce demand and reduce production.

I dint think your early experience is the reason. My daughter was in NICU for four days fed via a tube and I tried pumping without much success but I still managed to BF for a year. My son had a hard time latching on and I'd say it was two weeks before we got it right.
As stated the more you feed the more you will produce. Just keep at it. But if it doesn't work out don't beat yourself up about it.

Pumping helps me keep my supply up, sometimes I feel like it's dwindling but feeding on demand can also help

Try and reduce top ups if you can. They will really hinder your supply unless it's only expressed breast milk and even then the time spent expressing is not the same as time on your boob for your baby.

Relax, sit, drink lots and put your baby at your breast all the damn time. Let them sleep next to it and wake next to it. It'll improve quickly. You've got this mama! Smile

What do you mean by 'too up' OP?

Just feed, feed, feed. It's not uncommon for breastfed babies to feed and then want the boob again very quickly. Have you researched cluster feeding? Just pop baby on the boob whenever they want it.

Retreat to bed with the baby for a few days, spend as much time skin to skin as you can and let them be on the boob as much as they want to. Netflix and plenty of snacks to keep you going :)
