Day 4 and my milk still isn't really in Sad dd has already lost over 10% of her birth rate but the HTC isn't panicking just yet thankfully. How's everyone else doing with feeding?

Just commenting to be able to find this later, no baby here yet. Have you tried lots of skin to skin, green, and feeding all the time?

Report
Greenstone · 03/11/2014 16:52

Yep to both. It was the exact same with my dd1. Just no proper milk until day 5 Sad once it came in it was fine but the wait is quite tense and exhausting. Dd 2 did just do a run of 3 dirty nappies in a row so that's hopeful.

I really struggled with feeding in the first couple of weeks, DD lost 10.9% of her birth weight and we ended up being in hospital for a week because of it but it. I had to express and bottle feed and top up with formula as I wasn't producing enough milk. We had to record how much she was getting at each feed too...i know how exhuasting it Is! DD is 3 weeks today and is now almost exclusively breast feeding so feel like we have come miles since that first week!

Oh gosh that's tough! I can feel already tonight that there's more milk there so really hoping it won't come to that. My HV is good, she seems to be a look at the baby not the scales type and could see dd 2 's nappies were ok and that she was feeding lots so just said to see where we're at in a day or 2. Feeding newborns can be so tricky can't it. Really glad your little one has the hang of it nowSmile

That's great you've got a good HV who is understanding of how difficult it can be, I mean how are you supposed to feed if your milk hasn't yet come in! Hopefully it won't be long for you now.

DD won't settle tonight and only seems soothed by being fed...it's going to be a long night!

Hello, just marking my place really. Brain is a bit too scrambled to write. We are still not home (long story that I will explain at some point), however DD is in good shape (as am I) and we should get discharged in the next few days.

Greenstone - I really don't say this to annoy you, just because of the irony really. Day 2 here and my milk came in in abundance. My problem is that DD is very sleepy and is currently managing 10mins every 6 hours. As a result my boobs are not very happy. The neonatal nurses are watching her blood sugars which are fine, so I suppose she is getting what she needs. Just ouch. Hope you wake up looking like Pamela Anderson Wink.

Thanks kantha! Milk is in alright now though we have a new issue with a sleepy baby plus head cold Hmm she's doing ok now, feeding better and a bit more alert. HV keeping a close eye on her weight.
How are you and dd doing - did you get home?

Glad the milk came in for you. My milk has calmed down a bit today, so I am no longer in pain with engorged breasts. DD is very sleepy too. It's not something I have had to experience with my other two babies.

The great news is that we were discharged today so got out in time to collect DS2 from preschool with DH and the baby.

The last few days are catching up with me. I have taken myself off to bed at 6.30 this evening. I'm not yet in bed , but just to be in my own space trying to feed DD is so nice.

Tomorrow the PILs are going, the kids are at school and preschool till 3 and I am hoping DH and I will manage to have some time to just relax and enjoy our baby. Smile

Hello, well done for creating a new thread Greenstone

We've got a sleepy baby too and he has had problems latching. So we're using nipple shields and he's now back to his birth weight. Feeding is now on demand, as long as it's every five hours. So we're finally getting some sleep!

The HV has left a voicemail to arrange her first visit. I'm a bit worried as the place is a mess (just finished building work a couple of weeks before he arrived, and he arrived ten days early). Do they check/report on that kind of stuff?

Hey everyone, Ds born on Monday, really struggling with feeding, so painful, breast feel engorged and tingly now, but with dd last time I'm sure they were leaking too, non of that now though?
So worrying, midwife coming to weigh tomorrow (today!) terrified

Don't worry about the house at all. Someone once said to me that they would be more concerned if the house was excessively clean.

Is Mum coping/happy/supported?
Is baby doing well?
Plus the tests they do like hearing screening.

Obviously if you were living in a crack den then that might warrant a SS referral.

IME, many HVs can be a bit bonkers in what they say. Don't assume everything they tell you is gospel. Lots are lovely and brilliant at their job too of course.

Congrats Mr Monkey. I have MW coming today as well. I am also wondering/worried about how much weight will have been lost as DD is so sleepy then cluster feeds twice a day. Completely different to my first two who fed round the clock. My nipples hurt but in the same way they did with the others two. After a week or two they seemed to toughen up and stop hurting. Hopefully this time as well.

Congrata mrmonkey!

Try not to worry too much about the weight, weight loss is totally normal in the first few days. we had feeding problems in the first week or so and DD lost a lot of weight, she is now gradually putting it back on but still isn't quite back at her birth weight, now 3 weeks, but HV and Mw are happy that it is heading in the right direction even if not back at her birth weight.

Had to go to the GP yesterday as DD has a gunky eye, so have been given drops for it..she really doesn't like it when I give them to her! Sad

Hi all, our beautiful boy arrived early and very suddenly on Sunday. He is tiny and we were expecting a larger bundle! Had a few issues feeding poor latch, milk took its time to come in and a need to gain weight. Now plentiful supply which I am expressing and a small top of formula. Second weigh in today which hopefully will be a gain this time. Looking forward to hearing about everyone's new arrivals. But for now I need to get back to gazing at my boy!

Been a mad 10 days, DS has taken to his sister really well. DP started a new job on Monday so I've had to get used to two on my own sharpish.

Hi Thumperoo and Winterlover.

Well done for diving in with 2 by yourself. Whilst DH was on paternity leave after DS2 was born he went for a job interview all day. I was straight in the phone to my friend begging her not to leave me alone with my children. My head is currently swimming a bit at the prospect of 3 on my own in a few weeks once paternity leave is over.

Congrats Lisad, what a great weight your dd was! I hope your recovery is going ok.

Thumperoo same issues here with milk late and weight loss. Dd has been feeding great the last few days with good nappy output. We still ended up getting referred for a paedeatric assessment yesterday because she had lost again Shock but they were happy with her so long as we have weigh ins every 2nd day. We gave a small bit of formula again today but I find that dd just pukes back up any extra milk, whether breast or formula...Her tummy must be tiny still so I do wonder what's the point! Argh
