Moving baby into a cot - Help!

Hi

I'm having a major problem with my eight month old baby, its partly my own fault but I need some advice from all the parents out there. My son never settled well in his crib so he's always slept in the carrycot part of my pushchair system which is similar to a moses basket, we just sat the carrycot inside the crib as we wouldn't settle in the crib at all. He's now sitting up, crawling and pulling himself into a standing position so its no longer safe to have him in the carrycot inside the crib, we have tried to get him to sleep in his cot but he isn't having any of it and just screams. At the moment he's sleeping in the carrycot on the floor next to me in my bedroom, if he does wake up he shouldn't be able to do himself too much harm before waking me up.

I need to move him into his own bedroom but i've tried putting him in the cot during the day for naps and he just wakes up and wont go back to sleep, any ideas on how I can make the transition??

Do you have the hood up on the carrycot? Maybe it's the sense of being enclosed, could you make a hood for the cot?! Or, probably simpler, try taking the mattress from the carrycot and putting him to sleep on that in the cot?

I would try and make the transition at night first rather than the day naps, as he will be more tired then and you will have more chance of him sleeping through periods and getting used to the cot.

With mine I used to roll blankets and wedge them round the baby when first making the transition to cot, as they were used to being 'snug' in the Moses basket and the cot then seems like a big open space.

Unfortunately persistence is often the key in these situations, it make take a few nights/weeks of unsettled nights and crying but he will eventually get used to it. It can be tough to hold your nerve though, good luck.

Thanks for your response MsPickle, the carrycot does have a hood but we've never really had it up, I will definitely try putting the mattress from the carrycot into the cot and see if that works, I'm willing to give anything a go!

Perhaps combining the mattress and the rolled towels? I agree about the open space, it must take some getting used to! Good luck.
