I'm still waiting for MNTowers to comment on the fact that Waitrose have got into bed with Shell and therefore their 'ethical' claims have been blown skyhigh.

I think Waitrose have made a mistake and need to undo it, but they need help seeing the error of their ways and Mumsnet are in a great position to exert some pressure. If we do.

just let's remind ourselves about what Shell have done in Niger shall we?

You're duplicating a thread....

I started a new thread because there was no response on the other one. Your point being?

Hi Sophable we don't tend to make pronouncements/get involved unless there is a large and unanimous majority on stuff. I can see that you feel strongly but not sure that your verve is shared by others, so we're giving it a bit of time. We'll certainly get in touch with Waitrose and let them know that this discussion is happening though.
Thanks for raising the issue.

Hi Justine, I imagine that there is a clash of business vs your own morality here isn't there? I'm guessing you can't comment on that, but MN could make a big difference here. Waitrose are meant to be on the little guy's side. It doesn't really square does it?

No, not really - Waitrose have never been a big advertiser with us - if at all as it happens (though I see no reason to have a go at them without good reason as there's always hope smile). But, as said, we never do anything as MNHQ on the campaigns side without a lot of Mumsnetters feeling strongly and broadly the same way about it. It's been a rule over the years and, to be frank, my own views are largely irrelevant.
(And of course I can comment on this why wouldn't I be able to comment?)

I've just checked with the team and we have, as said, not done anything much with Waitrose in the past at MNHQ - we did that fish chat but very little if any money involved (though clearly there have been many many discussions on the threads about waitrose on the talk boards). As it happens they are about to do something limited around Mothers day with us - again small - but thought I'd mention it for the sake of full disclosure!
I will give them/the agency a bell to see if they'd like to comment on the Shell thing.

Justine, thanks for your openness. I'm so disheartened. whilst I hear you re majority opinion, I'm so suprised at the total apathy on here. People, loads of mners among them, who shop at waitrose can afford to choose where they shop. In the main they are privileged people. Waitrose would certainly rethink this policy if enough customers made their feelings heard but it seems that no one cares, on here at least.

If Waitrose was just another supermarket I wouldn't expect any different, but they promote themselves as an ethical brand. which is utter greenwash isn't it? Fuck the people in the Niger delta who are getting ill from carcinogenic water, can't fish, or eat or sell the fish which was their means of survival. Shell, as you know, have acted with total disregard of the population there and colluded with the govt in use of the most extreme measures to silence dissent. It's why they are on Amnesty's hitlist. What are Waitrose doing partnering them? And why don't waitrose customers give a toss?

I still, probably massively naively, believe that most of those customers don't know about this, and if they did would have something to say about it. I can't really stomach the thought that they do and couldn't give a.
