Can anyone give details in the Goverments proposed change in law to curb 'legal highs?'

While I understand the need to curb the availability of drugs that could be dangerous I heard at the time this policy change was announced that they are going to go overkill on it, and even certain foods (without any psychoactive properties) will be impossible to import.

What about people who buy medication on-line with no intention of getting some kind of 'buzz'. Viagra for example. Thousands of men manage to deftly circumvent what must be an embarrassing consultation with their GP via a credit card and a nice, discreet internet service.

I hear there are people with serious conditions who need to privately acquire certain medications as the NHS will not pay for them. Surely people in that situation need not worry about the proposed change in legislation.

I have a sleep disorder, its no where near as serious as conditions which blight other peoples lives but for decades I was left hamstrung by it. When I learnt there was a medication that could virtually null out the worst of this conditions symptoms I couldn't believe it. Then for years GP after GP after GP flat refused to prescribe it. I then warily, expecting to get ripped off, tried buying it on-line. It worked out so well it was as if the Death Star went Bang. It's rare that something lives up to the hype but the medication I ordered did all it was supposed to and more.

I managed to turn my life around because of this drug. I was on the verge of obesity, alcohol and drug addiction. This drug saved me from those fates and I find the prospect of not being able to get it terrifying. Should I worry?

May 2015; Blanket ban to clamp down on 'legal highs'
www.gov.uk/government/news/blanket-ban-to-clamp-down-on-legal-highs

Action to protect young people from the dangers of so-called ‘legal highs’ and target those who profit from their trade was announced by the UK government today (Friday 29 May).

Under the Bill:

• it will be an offence to produce, supply, offer to supply, possess with intent to supply, import or export psychoactive substances; that is, any substance intended for human consumption that is capable of producing a psychoactive effect. The maximum sentence will be seven years’ imprisonment.

• all of the UK will be affected by the blanket ban and law enforcement powers would be extended to all NPS supply from UK websites, so they can be shut down.

• substances, such as alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, food and medical products, will be excluded from the scope of the offence, as will controlled drugs, which will continue to be regulated by the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

• there will be powers to seize and destroy NPS and powers to search persons, premises and vehicles, as well as to enter and search premises by warrant if necessary.

• similar to the legislation introduced in Ireland, it will also capture substances that, although not new, are psychoactive, have been used as intoxicants for many years and are not harm free.

• there will be provision for civil sanctions – prohibition notices and prohibition orders – to enable the police and local authorities to adopt a proportionate response to the supply of NPS in appropriate cases.

Thanx isitme. But I read it twice and my twitter addled brainstill couldnt work out if I should worry. Any idea of a time scale ? And is a medicine of the eugeroic family considered psychoactive? Isn't caffeine psychoactive? Because Viagra works on penises not brains will my partner still be able to be combat ready even if he's just got back from his 14 hour shift at the slaughter house?

BTW the viagra query was a lame attempt at humour. I would never engage in any kind of interaction with a blue collar type.

even if he's just got back from his 14 hour shift at the slaughter house?

Even joking about sex, people have animals on the brain here.

Any idea of a time scale?

No sorry, it was a lazy post with no further thoughts, a real just cut and paste so just get on with it.

It mentions 'a Bill' is being drafted, is there a time frame on announcements of intent and a Bill being read?

In other words, absolutely no idea.
