Justine Roberts Co Founder of Mumsnet says, Mumsnet users will 'not lament the loss of the News of the World as a Newspaper'

How dare Justine Roberts speak for me and others in saying in todays Times that I as a user of Mumsnet will be glad that this 168 year old paper has folded. Murdoch as an Aussie and Roberts being married into the Guardian may not care about this paper but I an many others do, particularly with the loss of of 200 jobs. I'm not surprised she says the above as she is married to the deputy editor of the Guardian, who led the campaign against this paper. There is one thing Ms. Roberts can be sure of, the Guardian won't replace the News of the World, with its daily readership of 175.000!

I don't buy/read the papers because they are all full of celebrity drival. I won't lament the NOTW (or any paper really), but I do feel for those who have lost their jobs.
I'm sure they weren't he only paper using these kind of sources and tactics either...

Not happy that Justine, or anyone, feels they can speak on my behalf just because I happen to use mumsnet though Hmm Where's the link to that please..?

Grin Don't be surprised if this message is deleted by mumsnet.

I don't give a shit about the NOTW.

Think Justine is relaying the general feeling of large majority on mn.
Get a grip.

ggirl, nonetheless, Mumsnet isn't that homogenous and probably shouldn't been seen to be if all the other useful campaigning such as the Let Girls Be Girls campaign isn't to be tainted. Better not to be politically partisan, if MN is to apply political pressure to both parties on behalf of all parents.

Did she really say it, though? Or did she say 'will probably not lament...'? Or did the NOTW scum make it up?

Using the terminology 'my users' suggests she speaks for everyone and she DOES NOT.

Just re-read that article and, hmmm, that does seem a bit off - even if true for the most part.

Lemondifficult. Have you got a link to her comments? I read the comments in todays Times, but was unable to find the link to the Times article. Thanks.

You have to pay to read the Times online, so links won't work.

pfft. over 1500 posts on an In The News thread would disagree with you. Plus a dozen or so other threads.

The Times also said yesterday that Mumsnet users were all chamomile tea drinking, organic shortbread eating folk that caused the demise of the News of the World.

There's much more honesty and accuracy in Justine's statement than there is in the Editor of the Times'.

It's the Murdoch Empire vs Mumsnet. Who will win????

Actually, the article looks a bit fishy now I've re-read it. How likely is it that Netmums would describe their demographic as 'less cosmopolitan' than Mumsnet? Not very.

Here it is tho:

Justine Roberts, the co-founder of Mumsnet.com, has described the ?power? of websites such as hers that triggered an online campaign against the News of the World, contributing to its downfall.

Users of the influential parenting website published the names of the paper?s advertisers, gave out e-mail addresses for people to contact with complaints, and drove traffic on Twitter.

?The power of Mumsnet and social media groups is that they allow people to collect and organise easily,? Ms Roberts said. ?People who care about something can start a thread on Mumsnet, say who the right people to contact are, put up a pro-forma letter template or say ?re-tweet this? ? and people do it from the comfort of their own homes. They don?t have to attend rallies, they don?t have to go anywhere.?

She said that Mumsnet users ?will not lament the loss of the News of the World as a newspaper?. But Ms Roberts, who is married to Ian Katz, deputy editor of The Guardian, the newspaper that has been leading the charge on the issue, added: ?They think the wrong people are paying the price. The workers are paying the price for the bosses.?

She said that the ?outrage? about the scandal, in which the mobile phone of Milly Dowler was allegedly hacked, was the strongest she had ever witnessed on Mumsnet. By yesterday more than 1,200 people had added comments to a thread entitled: ?God, those NoW journos were utter scum, weren?t they??

At Netmums.com, another website for mothers that attracts millions of visitors a month, many were also angry about phone hacking. But a thread about sports days was twice as popular as the News of the World discussion. Those who run the website said that their ?demographic? differed from Mumsnet, being less cosmopolitan.

Driven by complaints on the site, Mumsnet ended a commercial partnership with Sky, in which users had had the chance to try new products. ?Users suggested we should not be working with them and accepting advertising revenue from the Murdoch empire,? Ms Roberts said.

I think the real fight should actually be between dead tree print media and internet social media.

Strangely, it seems the print media are too busy fighting amongst themselves to see off the threat from social media. And if this continues, Justine's hubby will be pleased that one of them has a job with a future Smile.

Well, I think MN should take down the police next. They took one heck of a lot of bribes.

I heard Times columnist Matthew Parris on Any Questions today. He sounded like a stooge for News International, parroting the party line about it being OK (apart from being illegal) to hack into the phones of politicians having affairs, but otherwise sounding terrified of saying anything that would cost him his job. So I wouldn't believe anything you read in The Times.

Interesting this. I'm pretty sure I said "ON THE WHOLE MNetters will not lament the loss of the News of the World" which I think is an accurate reflection of what we've seen on the site. I did ask for my quotes to be sent back so I could clear them, as I was keen to make sure they were accurate. The rest were, but this one wasn't.

I too am happy to be represented by Justine in this issue - and it v. probably reflects the mood of the nation. If she is being misquoted, in order to cause upset, then this comes as no surprise, despite her request to clear them.

Mumsnet is one of the institutions in this 'masque of anarchy' that emerges with any credit.

in fact, stanza 22 in Shelley's poem depicts Justine as the "manic maid". (Well, not actually her, you understand.)

Just out to get the last copy of the News of the World! Roberts does not represent the vast majority of MNs if she had said " the paper should be investigated (along with others) for phone hacking," Most would agree, but to close this paper down? I expect no less, from a person who has views very far from the norm.Sad

I'm very normal. I do not lament the passing of the NOTW, it had travelled very far from its roots.
