A Working class Mumsnet proposed!

Frank Field has proposed some ideas for removing poverty by means other than just financial. One proposal is the setting up of a mumsnet type site for the working classes. Isn't mumsnet meant for all or am I missing something? Are the working classes really needing this or is it a gimmick? confused article here

Wouldn't have thought a separate one was needed. Every time the assertion is made that Mumsnet is middle class, about 99% of posters turn up to claim they are working class.

I abstain because I have no idea what I am (being forrin and all).

Kaloki Fri 03-Dec-10 00:34:15

Definite gimmick. Mumsnet has a huge range of users, but some people are too stupid to realise that.

IDontLikeDisciples Fri 03-Dec-10 00:39:20

to state the obvious...netmums/ babycentre/ bounty etc....

madhattershouse Fri 03-Dec-10 00:40:21

Must be a site set up for those who agree with the quote.." I'm middle class. I can't be working class coz I aint gotta job ave I!"
grin

"about 99% of posters turn up to claim they are working class."

grin

and most aren't.

What about DoleScum like me. Am I going to be segregated?

IDontLikeDisciples Fri 03-Dec-10 00:46:35

I think that will be because people seem much more keen to declare themselves working class. Middle class is associated with nob jockery, obviously.

madhattershouse Fri 03-Dec-10 00:53:44

DTD I hope not or I'll be there too! What would they call it..scumsnet? grin

DioneTheDiabolist Fri 03-Dec-10 00:57:55

Ooh that sounds good Madhatter. So good in fact that when I finish my course and move up into the middle class I wouldn't want to leave.grin

LowLevelWhingeing Fri 03-Dec-10 00:59:35

What on EARTH does it mean? Does it mean a support/banter forum for working class people or just for working class mums confused

Surely there are, ahem, different kinds of forums to suit different tastes? And how would it help?

I really don't get it and there's no explanation in the piece.

LowLevelWhingeing Fri 03-Dec-10 01:01:54

Is it saying that MN spreads parenting advice but is not useful for working class people? shock

How would a site attract these Working Class Folk?

...

madhattershouse Fri 03-Dec-10 01:04:22

Tbh it sounds like they are proposing that help and support is the way out of poverty. In reality it sounds like a way of justifying more welfare cuts..helping yourself out of poverty is the excuse while the govt plunges you into financial hardship!

madhattershouse Fri 03-Dec-10 01:06:27

LLW if the govt is to be believed us poor can be convinced to do anything for a pack of fags and a pint!! grin

IDontLikeDisciples Fri 03-Dec-10 01:06:36

Maybe set it as the homepage on these free top of the range computers the 'poor' get wink

Kaloki Fri 03-Dec-10 01:10:10

Dione Don't be silly, we shouldn't even be allowed online! We must be punished after all

DioneTheDiabolist Fri 03-Dec-10 01:10:22

They could entice us with 10 Lambert and Butler and 4 Blue WKD.grin And maybe a voucher for sausage rolls and fruitshoots. You know for the weeins like.

tingletangle Fri 03-Dec-10 01:18:23

God it would be so dull. I relish watching you lot get worked up over the wrong colour casserole dish.

madhattershouse Fri 03-Dec-10 01:18:26

The sausage roll voucher MUST come from Greggs though grin

BertieBotts Fri 03-Dec-10 01:20:20

hmm I thought mumsnet was for all! Also doesn't it miss the point to segregate groups like that - how are you supposed to aspire to being middle class if all the other people on the site are working class as well?

And what is the obsession with moving people 'up' through the classes anyway? confused

DioneTheDiabolist Fri 03-Dec-10 01:21:59

But we have to go on line, it gives us something to do while our kids go out setting fires, terrorising old folk and stealing cars.

madhattershouse Fri 03-Dec-10 01:24:35

bertie I think the idea is that if you give the illusion of social mobitlity you can pulverise the poor as it is THEIR fault they are still lower class. Typical of this govt!

Kaloki Fri 03-Dec-10 01:26:25

True, I guess we could always be hacking someone elses wifi?

IDontLikeDisciples Fri 03-Dec-10 01:28:59

God was that casserole dish thread real, or have I just imagined it into my collective mumsnet memory?

I swear somebody was fuming the le creuset her mother had bought her for christmas was orange rather than red to match the rest of her collection.

Damn I spend way too much time on here.

IDontLikeDisciples Fri 03-Dec-10 01:29:57

And speaking of hacking wifi, I'm doing that right now. Cable internet is down and my neighbour if he really cared out to encrypt his wifi...
