Sakineh's adultery case is a tragic sham stacked with human rights violations. First, she was to be stoned to death. But the Iranian government had to revoke the sentence after her children generated a tremendous outcry against the farcical trial -- she could not speak the language used in court, and the alleged incidents of adultery took place after her husband's death.

Then her lawyer was forced into exile, and the prosecution conjured up a new trumped-up charge for which she would be executed -- the murder of her husband. Despite this being double jeoprady, as she is already serving time for alleged complicity in this crime, Sakineh was tortured and paraded on national television to 'confess', and was found guilty. The regime has now arrested two German journalists, her lawyer and her son, who has bravely led the international campaign to save his mother. All remain in prison and Sakineh's son and lawyer have been also tortured and have no access to lawyers.

Now Iranian human rights activists state an order has just been issued from Tehran to implement her killing immediately, she is on the list and tomorrow is execution day.

Persistent campaigning led Iran to drop Sakineh's stoning sentence and captured the attention of leaders in countries with influence on Iran, like Turkey and Brazil. Now let's urgently raise our voices to stop her killing and inhumane treatment and free her, her lawyer, her son and the jailed German journalists.

Personally I don't think that the death penalty is right but equally I am very about this notion that we should interfeer in the justice processes of other countries purely because we do not agree with them. We would not welcome the same level of intrusion into our own justice systems so what gives us the right to make demands of other countries?

It could be argued that if you murder someone in a country where the penalty for that is execution, then you do so knowing what the consequences will be if you're caught. Unfortunately the same could equally be argued about adultery - it's not right, but the laws exist, and those who break them are aware of the consequences before doing so.

And in this case I don't think it's clear that she did commit adultery, let alone murder, but she's been condemned anyway.

I worry that if we mass together and shout at the Iranians all we're doing is playing into their hands. They know the world is watching and they know very well we disapprove of their methods but they will play this little charade out for the Islamic world as another example of the infidel West having it in for the honourable and god-fearing Iran. I feel nothing but pity for the woman in this case but she is a lost cause, I fear. Much more important that we give our support to the people within Iran, striving to restore democracy and decency to a once-great nation.

What has she done? Has she murdered someone?

People are regularly hanged in Singapore for
drup smuggling, but there is no outcry about that.

If you murder someone you are also hanged, three people were hanged some years ago in Singapre for the murder of a taxi driver.
Only one mnudered the man, the rest did not stop the murder.

It's caught the news because originally she was sentenced to being stoned to death.

She's accused of murder and adultery, but whether she actually committed the offences is another matter.

People do raise an outcry when other human beings are treated unfairly.

The fact that she is a woman has made things worse for her.

If this women and her family are being treated unfairly. They should of course be freed. Must say I can't see it, as my Iranian freinds (and I agree) say Iran does not like to be told how to behave by the West or anyone else.

I don't know a lot about this case but it is my understanding that international pressure did stop her being stoned to death but I do wonder how much notice Iran generally takes of western pressure. Doesn't mean we shouldn't try to challenge unjust and inhumane actions though does it?

Interesting bit at the bottom of this bbc report -
"An Iranian foreign ministry spokesman accused the West of trying to exert undue pressure on his country.

"They have become so shameless that they have turned the case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who has committed crime and treason into a human rights case against our nation," said Ramin Mehmanparast.

"It has become a symbol of women's freedom in Western nations and with impudence they want to free her. Thus, they are trying to use this ordinary case as a pressure lever against our nation," he was quoted as saying by Iran's ISNA news agency, according to AFP."

As for getting mixed up in the politics of other countries, don't amnesty international campaign in all countries where punishments are unjust - They aren't just picking on this one.
