Looking for a Bible for my 8 year old DD

Probably erring towards 'bible stories' rather than an actual Bible, but not too watered down if possible. Would like some nice illustrations too.

I was looking at this on Amazon, but I've not seen it in the flesh yet.

Any experience of that one or other recommendations?

It's a gift for her Confirmation next week and she's a pretty confident reader.

I'd get a proper grown up NIV, so she can grow into it.

There are lots of different bibles for children here but I would recommend the Illustrated Children's Bible by Dorling Kindersley.

Perhaps littlelapin can help as she sells Usborne books?

Quite agree with you there littlelapin.

It sounds as if the little ones are covered with tattoos.

It was posted before I had coffee, tsk.

I bought DD this one:

Children's bible

Its a real bible, so paper is really thin, but it is a translation specifically for 8-12yos. DD is only just 9, and reads it regularly. She says "its a really good bible", she reads it in conjunction with some of her bible story books.

DS (nearly 9)has that translation too Mary... we bought it when he got fed up that he hadn't got all the Bible stories in his Bible. DD (6.5) has it too, but a different edition, same translation but different version which has some study guide type extras in too.

we like it as it gets rid of all the rhetorical questions - less poetic perhaps but much easier to understand at tthat age.

My DDs (8 and 10) were given a standard Good News bible each at their confirmations. The language is simple enough for children without being too young for them.

That looks really good MaryBS.

I'm contemplating getting a proper Bible (i.e. actual translation, not Bible stories) for my six year old. She's a confident reader, so might begin to read some of the more straightforward stories and I'd like to use it in conjunction with some of the SU notes, to see how she gets on.

Do you think it would be suitable - or would it still be a bit too old for a six year old? Obviously we would steer clear of some of the gorier parts of Judges for a few years!

Great Bible story book: this is very imaginatively and sensitively told, not at all traditional. We read the Christmas story from it on Christmas Eve. It might be a little young for her, but even my 10 year old DS likes it.

There's a lovely M & S one with gold trim and a gold ribbon that does a good job of retelling the stories.

For a proper Bible the New Century International Children's Bible has been translated directly from the original texts - it's not an adult Bible dumbed down for children. It's great for trying to understand the text, rather than just learning the stories.

Snap, PP, that's the one I recommended!

Smithagain, she'd grow into it I think. It will also help her develop her vocabulary.

Sorry, Mary BS!

Smithagain, my DD (6) loves using these notes

Smith - my DD is 6 and copes wit it, started off by reading through Genesis! I like the look of those notes PP

I have to confess that I used DD's book for studying the OT. I'd read it in HER version first, before referring to my "grown-up" version

Thanks everyone (and sorry to hijack your very useful thread, Ceolas!)

Am now definitely motivated to try some proper Bible-reading with DD.

(I was quite mortified when my teacher friend did a supply RE lesson with DD's class and commented about how surprised she was at the lack of knowledge of Bible stories among the children. A bit worrying, considering that the class includes at least five children who attend church every week, including my daughter and my friend's son!! )

I think, in fact, that DD knows lots of Bible stories, but doesn't realise that the Bible is where they came from. Time to do something about that!

Well I got the one I linked to first as I wasn't able to find a great selection to look at in the flesh. It looks really good. Nice illustrations and language appropriate to her level
