For no particular reason I feel like sharing my favourite hymns with you all today...I'd be interested to know what yours are, ancient or modern?

In no particular order:

Jesu, Lover of My Soulhere I can't find a tune to share with you though.
Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence here
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (Blaenwen version of the music) here
My Song Is Love Unknown (John Ireland 1918 version) here

Oh I love hymns - the one I really like I can never remember the title of - will go and think... is it Star of The Sea, or is that a line from it...I also like For Those in Peril on the Sea and at Christmas I love the Magnificat

Oh yes I like Eternal Father too. I almost never recognise hymns by their titles though!

I'm a devout atheist but "Dear Lord and Father or Mankind" is just beautiful. I often long for that "still small voice of calm" .

oooh how odd was that that we posted it at the same time. Its the "still small voice" that gets me too . Wish I had it more often

oh god I hate questions like this - I don't have any favourites - that's the problem with being an organist - you play so many lovely hymns it's impossible to choose

mind you I do have an increasingly long list of hymns I don't want at my funeral (morbid I know ) as they're so common

Hassled - I like Dear Lord and Father too - especially that line.

I wanted to have it at our wedding but decided against it because the Minister - Church of Scotland, v old-fashioned, small village, you get the picture - had a rule about this hymn. He used to agree to marry couples who had been living together ("over the broom") but only on the condition that HE chose the hymns for their wedding. And he always chose that one because of the second line..."forgive our foolish ways".

yep they're two of them - plenty more - haven't got my list to hand

Amazing Grave
Jerusalem
Morning has broken
O Jesus I have promised
The King of Love
ermm can't remember the others.

Nothing wrong with any of those hymns on the list - I just don't want them at my funeral

MAS

is this it

Lord, for tomorrow and it's needs
I do not pray;
Keep me my God from stain and sin

Just for today.

Let me both diligently work
and duly pray;
Let me be kind in word and deed,
Just for today.

Let me be slow to do my will,
prompt to obey;
Help me to mortify my flesh,
Just for today.

Let me no wrong or idle word
unthinking say;
Set thou a seal upon my lips,
Just for today.

Let me in season, Lord, be grave,
in season gay;
Let me be faithful to thy grace,
Just for today.

My mum, who is practically a professional funeral-goer, always says the "hymn book falls open at page with Abide with me on it".

She also does good reviews of the "cup of tea" afterwards. "They had vol au vents, who wants a vol au vent after a funeral?"

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (Blaenwen version of the music) for me too
And Guide me O thou great Jehovah to Cwm Rhonda

Had them both at our wedding

I also love How great thou art
Loads of them. In some ways I prefer the proper old hymns to some of the cheesy stuff now.

ooh, so many-
Amazing grace - mainly due to the history behind it and the words penned by a man whose life changed so dramatically when he found god
Meekness and majesty - and really most of graham kendrick's hymns
And, yes, have just listened to dear lord and father or mankind and it is beautiful

Does anyone else love the ones that are specific to a time or group of people such as the harvest ones or to those at peril on the seas (name?)
