Simple child's bedtime prayer- any ideas?

spiritofstlouis · 11/01/2008 21:36

I'd like to add a prayer to my DS's bedtime routine (he's 9 months...)- it just needs to be a couple of lines long. I'm afraid I can't really think of anything other than God bless mummy, daddy etc. It would be lovely to find something he will find comforting as he gets older.

Thanks

Couold you bump this in a few days? We used to say a lovely little prayer at primary school and when i went to a school mass a few days ago they still said it but i can't remember it! Hopefully going to church tomorrow so i can ask the priest if he can remember it?

The only one I've heard goes ,'If I die before I wake, I beg the Lord my soul to take.' But TBH I find that kind of scary and it would probably give me nightmares even now. Try Our father ....

Dear Father in heaven look down from above,
Bless Mummy and Daddy and those who I love.
May angels watch over me sleeping and when,
The morning is breaking,Lord awake me. Amen.

I remember my grandmother teaching me "As I lay me down to sleep..." but not wanting to think about dying at bedtime!

That's a lovely one MrsKitty- thanks.

We always say
Gentle Jesus meek and mild
look apon this little child
pity my simplicity
and teach me lord to come to thee
Amen

God bless Mummy Daddy DS1 & DS2 and everyone else in the whole wide world Amen

Kitty I love that it is perfect for a child - I have always thought that Gentle Jesus was a bit grown up.

I close my eyes and softly say,
Thank you Lord for XXXX today.

XXXX = Insert whatever you are thankful for

we like to sing made up verses to the tune of "He's got the whole world in his hands"

so we "pray" for various family members, eg "he's got granny and grandad in his hands" or "he's got your cousins in ireland" (only their actual names!) etc etc

We use the Teaspoon prayer is TSP - thank you/sorry/please

Ds is 5 though and so we've only just introduced the "sorry" part now he can understand consequences a bit better.

So thank you for xxxxxx, please help xxxx. The help bit is usually for a good night' sleep!

I see the moon
The moon sees me
God bless you
and God bless me

...then we usually go on to take turns, it goes something like this:
(dd) 'God bless Mummy and Daddy,
(me) 'God bless Auntie X',
(dd) God bless Granny, God bless door, God bless curtains...etc etc

I love the ones above, I've saved them for future reference thanks all.

God our Father, I come to say
Thank you for your love today.
Thank you for my family
And all the friends you give to me.
Guard me in the dark of night
And in the morning, send your light.

Or, what I do with DS1

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay
Close by me for ever and love me I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care
And fit us for heaven to live with thee there.

my ds has a nice prayer book, from which his favourite goes something like:
Dear God, please watch over me and keep me safe tonight, for I am just a little boat on a big and wonderful ocean. amen
Ds likes the idea of boats and adventures before he is drifting off to sleep!

I really like the teaspoon idea to help remember tsp. brilliant. We havent yet learnt to say sorry in our prayers so this is a good idea for my ds age 5.

My dad and me used to say this when I was little:

God bless all those that I love
God bless all those that love me
God bless all those that love those that I love
and all those that love those that love me!

branflakes never heard that one before, bit of a tounge twister lol

My dc used to say this one in nursery..

'Oh my god you love me,
Your'e with me night and day,
I want to love you always, in all I do and say.
I try to please you Father, bless me through the day, Amen'

this is probably more of a mornig prayer tho... they also said the one that Tommy posted.

I love BeeEm's one - the 'if I die before I wake' ones are too disturbing
