Another week, another priest rapes more kids, his church help him

Does it even count as news any more.
The CoE "defence" last week was that this was all long in the pas.
No doubt they will say that when they helped cover up another rapist in the Victorian times like err umm 2001, this was "how things were handled in those days".
Again, the churchmen who covered up the rapes, and ensured that other children were raped, will walk free.
Again we will hear them saying "ooops sorry mate", tellingu s that they were "acting in the best interests of the church."
Again Christians on will go to Church on Sunday, and help support this gang of rapists.
Again Chrisitans will say "this was not my bit of the Church, and if my priest turned out to be a rapist, I'd go to the church down the road instead."

you are right that the church stance on abuse is absolutly wrong but your post -

Again Christians on will go to Church on Sunday, and help support this gang of rapists.

is not fair at all.

thats like sayng that because a techer was found guilty of child abuse then clearly the governemt are putting our children at risk forcing them into an environment where peadophiles prey. all teachers are child molesters becasue there have been a few foudn guilty.

Another week, another post about priests from DominiConnor.
(though I'm in no way trying to undermine the subject matter)

Are you talking about the one in Clevedon?

Yawn

Not at the subject matter, but at the utter predictability of DC.

If so - I live nearbt - he was the talk of the town when 9/11 occurred as he had a "very dear coucin" (I think) that died in that tragedy - I would not have known him apart from that!!!

What are these people up to - he put himself about on the TV etc etc night after night, did he not think someone would then report him for what he had done!!!!!

Feel soooooo sorry for his victims - to those of you he abused pleased be strong and don't tlet him win!

Take care X

Pindy

No apologies needed.

But it has got to the stage that if I see DC on a thread I steer clear of it.

(and no I don't support rapists)

The standard attacks on me ?
How many of the Christians around here are prepared to sat the same things to their priests ?
If they meet a bishop is it all smiles and "nice to meet your sir ?" Do you ask about the rape of children ?
No.
That would be rude, and you wouldn't want to offend a priest would you ?

tis absolutely shocking. The rapes I mean. Even more of an insult is that he only got 5 1/2 years. Why such a short sentence?

Report
DominiConnor · 04/05/2007 10:10

5 1/2 years means he'll probably be out in a couple of year. He's a priest, it's not as bad to be a rapist apparently...
But the real scandal is the way that his accomplices in the CoE have got away scot free.
Bishops and fellow priests have a long history of not only helping rapists, but knowing that they do so at no risk to their freedom or jobs.
Indeed, the pattern does rather seem to be that helping paedophiles is good for your promotion prospects if you're hoping to get a mitre.

Well from what I understand from the news is that the bishop at the time is now dead. The current bishop tried to report it to the police, who told him that unless the man was prepared to lodge a formal complaint they couldn't take it any further.

I'm not excusing those involved in any way, but the story is never as simple as it seems at first glance.

As for speaking to the priests/bishops, why should they know any more than the rest of us, unless they are personally involved? I have never shirked at raising awkward issues with my priest, and I hope I never shall.

As for the rest of your tripe - as I said, I'll pray for you. You've obviously got some deeprooted grudge against the church, which you express in apparently righteous indignation every now and again!

Personally I've been very lucky in the support I've had from the church, and the people in it. Don't tar everyone with the same feather please!

D'ya know-for once I agree (to an extent) with DC on this.
There have been too many cover ups and excuses over the years.
Iam not tarring everyone with the same brush but there is a point here.

Now I am really going to put a cat amongst the pigeons-because I feel like it and have witnessed it,that Catholic priests/and the church have a lot more to hide than our Anglican friends.....is it because Anglicam vicars are "allowed" to be married and Catholic priests are supposeldy celibate?

Don't know...open the debate....

The Catholic church is a lot bigger, so inevitably it will have more dodgy people in it.

But it's hard to say for certain, whether the Catholic church is worse. We are clearly dealing with cover ups by large organisations, and what we hear is as much a function of how well they succeed in hiding rapists as much as how many they have.
In Europe, Britain, and America, the police show no interest in investigating the organisation, rather than just prosecute the scapegoat they've found.
The christian churches are not to blame for having bad people in their midst. Their criminal culpability is in knowingly helping them.

Even when the churches openly admit they help rapists, no one is prosecuted.

LOL, I knew this was DC

But actually his hammering home is beginning to have some effect on me. I agree with him actually, this is a fucking disgrace.

And I'd rather listen to him obsessing on than Xenia.

yawn - DC is at it again............when I go to church on Sunday - having got a 'day off' from my normal duties playing the organ I'm going to be supporting rapists..............yeah right and you should have seen the pig that just flew past my window !

I was just wondering when DC's movie was coming out... isn't there already a film called Conspiracy Theory?

I see the police are now implicated in the coverup

Let's raise the debate a little hmm??

From the press stories I read it sounded as though someone had made an allegation in the past but hadn't wanted to take it to court. What SHOULD the church do in this situation?

Report
Pixiefish · 05/05/2007 08:14

Of course the church should have passed the complaint on to the police.

I am a secondary school teacher and when children confide in me that they are being abused I am obliged legally (and morally obviously) to report the matter to the Senior Team who in turn have to ring either- the Police, NSPCC or Social Services.

It isn't up to us as teachers to judge whether the child is telling the truth or not- that's up to the systems in pllace within the police or the cps.

So, in answer to the question- what should the church have done if they had been made aware of a previous complaint- they SHOULD have reported it to the police.
