Lunar Eclipse

DON'T miss tonight's total lunar eclipse. As long as clouds don't get in the way, we should be in for a dramatic show. Look to the east, low near the horizon, at moonrise, around 8.30pm. The full moon will already be starting to darken in the earth's 'penumbra', that's the lighter shadow which precedes the full eclipse. Later, the deeper shadow of the earth's 'umbra' will gradually move over the surface of the moon until the eclipse is 'exact', that's the moment of total eclipse, at 9.33pm. Over the next 45 minutes the moon will slowly return to fullness.
