My DS is making his confirmation name very soon and we/he haven't chosen a name yet. We are trying to find something a little unusual but also meaningful. Am also a little confused as to names we can choose from - guidance please! Possible contenders are Augustus, Bartholomew and Benedict ............... Thanks

Does he have a particular interest that you could research the patron saint of? There are quite a few websites that give the names of saints, their stories and patronage. Or perhaps look at the stories of the three on his list and see if any resonate? Also family names can be quite useful, he may have relatives with a saint's name that he could research.

Knowsabit, Catholics take a new name for confirmation. OP, wouldnt it be Augustine, or is there a St Augustus as well? What about Aloysius?

Thanks for all the replies. Fran - yes, there are three St Augustuses - all French. DS wants to have something a little unusual and we have recycled all our family names many, many times....... Ginger - nice idea but football, ps3, tennis, the dog..........

When I was at school, most of the boys picked Aloysius and Ignatius type names for a laugh It was just left to the child though, no influence from parents.

There's a patron saint for everything!

For computer users, it's Isidore of Seville; for dog lovers there's Hubert of Liege, Roch or Vitus; for sport Sebastian.

Of have Benedict to mark the Pope Emeritus; or wait and see what name the new Pope takes.

What about Jude? He's the patron saint of lost and desperate causes, may come in handy one day?! Lovely name though, although I am biased as it is ds's name Grin

Just wait a few days, see what Pope name the new incumbant takes and go for that!!!!!

Maximillian (St Maximillian of Kolberg)?

There is also a patron saint of footballers - if he fancies Luigi! www.catholicherald.co.uk/spirituallife/saintoftheweek/2011/03/31/the-patron-saint-of-footballers-who-worked-tirelessly-for-the-poor/

Saint Roch is the patron saint of dogs.

Patron saints of countries or places might also be worth exploring.

Edmund? Guthlac, Beccelm and Tatwin are all names of monks who came to East Anglia. There are a few more of them, all with interesting names.
