Can someone answer me a Q about iconography

We have been on holiday to Greece and have seen lots of icons in churches. DD wants to know why Christ is often shown in a certain pose; what is its meaning or symbolism.
It's the pose where he holds up his right hand with the first and second fingers skyward and the ring-finger touching the thumb. Like this. Why? Why not thumb and first finger. Or thumb and pinkie, or any other combination. Why thumb and ring finger?

donna123 I think you'll find it represents the first and last letters in the Greek for Jesus Christ IC XC (IESOUS XRISTOS). In Greek lower case sigma at the end of a word looks rather a "C" with a tail!
