i would be incredibly cautious with any basset cross breed tbh ,adorable though they are ,they can have lots of problems due to breeding ,i dont know anyone who has had one who didnt end up with huge vets bills . A cocker cross sounds mad , take a dog with restricted movement and then cross it with a cocker who is a busy dog by nature . Im all for cross breeds but this sounds very gimmicky .

Basset hound x cocker is just screaming for lifelong ear problems. Both breeds are prone to ear/skin problems, so doubling those genes sounds like a recipe for disaster. As Justwater said, they are also polar opposites in terms of energy, plus bassets have the hound nose, and cockers the energy of a hunting dog (as a rule). Factor in the stubbornness of the basset (they are known for it) and to me that sounds like a walking ear infection that'll follow its nose for miles, refusing to come when called.

Both are nice breeds in their own rights, but combined and its one to avoid.

If you did go for it, then I would say get full whack pet insurance!!!!!

This kind of cross-breeding to make a new breed seems to be all the rage these days, and I am generally wary! First generation dogs (ie the original basset mated with the original cocker) might have some degree of hybrid vigour, but once these breeds get more popular they get interbred to "purify" the new breed, leading to personality and health problems. If I was you, I'd go to the pound and get a cross breed that you like the look of, or choose an established breed! Otherwise, as someone else suggested, get decent insurance!

I have a Hush Bassett (cocker spaniel/bassett hound mix). He's the sweetest, cutest thing! He's more bassett than cocker in looks and ways. He has a bassett body but thinker fur. He's slow and lazy, does his own thing like a bassett. I can't find another unfortunately. I would love to give him a brother or sister. For now he has a cocker spaniel brother. People want to come up to him all the time to pet him because he's so different. He's a great snuggler in bed! I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world! I'm so lucky to be his mom!!!

We have a 9 month old basset and she is super energetic for a basset! When we take her to the park she loves running and playing with her doggy pals. The only thing I would say is as above, that cocker spaniels (and every cross I have seen) is massively energetic and never seem to get tired. When my basset plays she does get upset a little because she can't keep up (they are bred for stamina not speed) so I would be cautious about crossing with a cocker spaniel. Also, with basset hounds you have to be very careful as puppies as they need time to grow and if they do get exercised too much (mainly walking on lead) then this can cause problems, restricting exercise with anything that has cocker spaniel in it could be difficult, especially as a puppy.

That said I have also seen a Hush Basset and it was completely adorable. We are after a Basset Bleu de Gascogne but you just don't get them in the UK and this looked exactly like one, I loved it.

We have the same thing with a Basset, everyone loves her and she gets lots of attention because there just aren't many of them, its got to the point where she will just 'flat basset' and lie down and refuse to move till people come over to give her attention (they are very stubborn fyi).
