Best place to adopt a cat

Hi All

We are thinking about getting a cat that can live with our dog who is easy going and can be bossed around by a cat I am sure!

Would a kitten be better or a cat in our circumstances? We live in the country with a large garden in a quiet dead end road with open fields surrounding us. Someone is always around and we have grown up children.

I have been looking at Cats Protection but there doesn’t seem to be many cats for adoption.

I have had a cat before but not living alongside a dog.

I love British Blues and the Sphinx cat looks interesting should we go down the pure breed route. Definitely want an indoor and outdoor cat. The right cat would love it around here. We can put a cat flap in if required.

What sort of dog? I wouldn’t get a kitten with a young dog or large dog. They are VERY small and vulnerable.
Unless you REALLY want a pedigree I would contact rescues. They may be happy to dog test a cat or let you know when an appropriate cat comes in.

We have a Labrador age 5. There just don’t seem to be many cats around in the rescues. Happy to provide pictures, house check etc for any of the rescue centres.

The thing is that rescues often don’t put cats up as ok with dogs unless they are absolutely sure that the cat has lived harmoniously with a dog before. Worth asking about. Good luck.

Would recommend Battersea we got a rescue cat and he’s great (and I wasnt keen at all). We had to wait a while as they have less and lots of demand just now but we were patient as wanted to get the right one. They are very caring as well. Worth giving them a call to discuss - they do specify on details of cats whether they can live with dogs.

Don't just look on the CP webpage, get in touch with them. Sometimes the web isn't up to date and some cats don't get on to it because there are suitable adopters waiting for cats that we are aware of. Last year I had a waiting list as long as my arm for kittens so we never advertised them. We quite often have cats that have lived with dogs before.
Look on the Catchat webpage for other local rescues.

A sphinx wouldn't suit you, they don't go outside.

If you search your area on the CatChat website you’ll also find the small, independent rescues local to you. They are often able to be more flexible than the big charities. www.catchat.org
