My cat has been shaved

Today I went back home and found that my cat has been shaved on her side. She is black and white and on her side there is now a long white line showing her white skin. No blood. Although she does not seem to be suffering
I am near tears.
Should I report it to the police?
What does it amount to?

If you buy pets, and let them 'roam', then, they will 'roam' into trouble I'm afraid.

Wow! How did she let someone get close enough?!

Bless her, and you. How bizarre. I’ve never heard of anything like this before and it would spook me too. I’m not sure if the police will do much but I’d keep an eye on her if you can. We have housecats (and a breed that suits being a housecat well) because our neighbours had cats stolen a few times but I understand it’s difficult to keep an eye on cats that love the outdoors!

Hopefully nothing like this happens again.

I would report on the non emergency number. Op out of interest which part of the country are you from?

Just to add that there was a cat shaved in my town this week but also badly hurt. That's why I would call non emergency.

Is it possible she has squeezed through somewhere and left a line of fur caught on something (a rough fence edge or something) as she went through? Our dogs (long haired) have all ended up leaving chunks of hair attached to shrubs, metal chairs, garden care etc when they have got caught and pulled away, pulling out the fur and resulting in a bald patch a couple of times?

Definitely no scar? Sometimes rescues spay cats they think are not spayed and then release them. But that would mean she’d been missing for longer so not likely...

Would someone have taken it on themselves to have her neutered?

rage thats a bit harsh! Most cats like to go out unless like other poster who has house cats who like it. Its more cruel not to let them out. OP can't stop her cat from 'roaming' as you put it-its natural instinct for a cat.

I have heard of this before. Someone was checking to see if your cat had been neutered - possibly wanted to use her for breeding. Is she a pedigree?

rage im sure most of us cat owners dont expect there to be pathetic humans who will shave our cat for fun.

i dont know if the police can do anything OP Sad have a word with other cat owners near by, see if they notice anything? if she’s happy staying in maybe keep her in for a week or so.

That's horrible. Just because a cat is allowed to roam shouldn't mean that it's ok for someone to shave it. I wouldn't be shocked if my cat got into a fight with another cat but shaved?!? I dunno what to suggest but it must have been shocking to come home to.
