How old is my kitten?

So I saved a kitten from the wild a few days ago, and guessed he was about 12 weeks old, but I’m starting to wonder if he is younger, he only has 4 teeth, 2 on the top, 2 on the bottom, his eyes are still blue, he is tiny, but I’ve not weighed him as he is super skinny from living outdoors, anyone have a guess on how old he could be?

My kittens eyes were blue until about 9 weeks he was also tiny. You really need to get him vet checked especially if you are rescuing him. If you sign up to your vets pet plan (mines is 10.99 a month) then they carry out checks, microchipping, vaccines and flea and worm treatment and you can spread the cost.

My kittens came to me at eight weeks (I know their mum's owner) and their eyes were no longer blue, so yours is younger.

If you have found a kitten you need to take it to the vet for a check. They will help you determine its age and any treatment it may need. What are you feeding it on?

This is him, I’m feeding him kitten food and kitten milk, he’s booked in for the vets next week as that’s when I get paid, he’s also already been wormed and fleed x

He is adorable. My completely unprofessional guess would be 8 weeks?

I was trying to find a pic of mine when we first went to see them but I can’t.

He looks young though, I’d guess at six weeks.

If his eyes are blue he's less than 9 weeks old. Only a vet can really tell you though and all we can do is guess. He will need a vet check anyway and treating for fleas and worms so I would make an appointment ASAP.

He is booked in for next week and I treated him for worms and flees at home as I can’t get him in till next week

You need to get flea and worm stuff through the vet. OTC stuff is at best ineffective and at worst downright dangerous. Also for such a small kitten you need vet advice.

You shouldn't have flea treated and wormed him if you didn't know his age. Many have minimum ages and weights on them and for very young kittens only vet prescribed treatment is safe. What did you use?

I went to the local pets at home and got frontline spot on for kittens and worming syrup for kittens

Such an amazing thing to do. He looks like he is 8 weeks or less. I got my kitten last year and she was 12 weeks old and bigger. Do let us know how you get on. Good luck.

He is adorable. 7/8 week’s would be my guess.

Don’t worry too much about having worm d and flead him, you are doing your best and have taken the poor wee mite in, great job imo - please update after vet has guessed his age

I’d say about 8 weeks also...here is our kitten at 6 weeks and then when we brought him home at 12 weeks, yours definitely looks younger than 12 weeks, he’s gorgeous!

How cute! Mine still had blue eyes at 10 weeks when I got her (from a rescue). Took a few more weeks to turn amber. Gorgeous kitten and well done You!

What wormer? Frontline doesn't work and may not be suitable for a small kitten. Please consult vet.

I am, I have been saying above he is booked into the vet next week

But if what you have treated him with is ineffective or maybe dangerous he needs to go before then.

Report
Julieelizabeth5 · 25/10/2017 18:38

I haven’t got the money to get him in before then, plus the consultant I need to see is on training so they couldn’t get me in until next week anyway

I spoke to a worker at pets at home and the worming syrup can be used from 2 weeks of age and the flee treatment from 8 weeks

what a beautiful cat. He looks very content for a feral puss. You have a fabulous friend there. My friend rescued a kitten and it stayed behind the piano for 3 days took a few months before it relaxed properly. Hope the check at the vet goes well. What have you called him?

Why do you need to see a consultant? Any vet should do.
Cats are expensive. I hate to say this but can you afford to keep it? Sorry but they are. Look into pet insurance and see if your vet will do a payment plan if you need it.
