How many pets?

Hi all,

Just curious, how many pets do you have? Do you have a limit?

We have 2 hamsters and 2 rabbits in garden hutches. Thinking of getting a kitten but DP (who doesn't live with me, it's just ds and I day to day thinks it's an awful idea. Am I mad, is it too much??

It depends, as long as you can afford to keep them clean, feed them and keep them healthy, as many as you like (afford time wise as well as £££)

We have 2 dogs, 12 cats and as of this morning, 3 rescue kittens (approx 2-3 weeks old) to hand rear

Hamsters don't take up much room, or time, so I wouldn't say it was too much, provided you can provide everything a kitten needs

Thanks both of you.

I've decided not to get one just yet. I'd love to upgrade the rabbits hutches this summer and couldn't realistically do that with the added bills a kitten would mean for me.

Shame but tbh now I've looked up the costs involved I know it's more doable than previously thought and I'll be more prepared when we are ready to expand our pet family.

We now only have the hamster left (18 yo cat died on Monday [s ). Did have 3 cats a while ago.

Cats can be quite high maintenance - think about what you'd do when you go on holiday...

Best of luck with your menagerie!

I've got a kitten, a cockatiel, two rabbits, and two tropical fish tanks. As others have said, as long as you have enough room and time and you can afford vets bills etc there shouldn't be a limit Smile

I have two cats, a hamster and two guinea pigs.

They are all very spoilt well looked after.

The animals have to be compatible or be able to be kept safely apart.

We had a Rescue cat for 15 years (she was 17yo when she died) so the goldfish had to be kept safe (she was a hunter)

Now we have 3 guineas (neutered boar+two sows) so they rule out everything else Grin in their opinion.
Dogs not an option due to work, cat not an option as we have no way to fit a catdoor and the guineas don't want to share their garden.

I have 4 guinea pigs and one rabbit though he'll get a wife when he's old enough to have the snip.

I have two pets (cats) unless you count the fish in the pond, in which case I have approximately 35. The fish are all called Dave.

The cats are low maintenance day-to-day but when they have a crisis they're a bit of a pain. For instance one of them got beaten up a while back, so he had to go to the vet, stay there, be stitched up, be collected, go back for a check-up ... all at a point when we weren't expecting to do any vet visits. Or pay for them - that was £225 in all. But they're easier than dogs as they don't need walking and can be left overnight with full food bowls, and for holidays with someone coming in to feed them.

I have:
2 small dogs
1 kitten
3 ferrets (outside)
1 parrot
1 terrapin.

All very loved and cared for but certainly have more than enough for now, the terrapin is my son's and easy to look after but the others are very demanding in terms of time.

currently have one guide dog and a parrot. Lost seventeen yo cat in May, and have contemplated getting more kittens but vet bills and dead birds/mice/rats are allowing my head to rule my heart.

We have 3 cats aged 18, 9 and 1. Also a sole guinea pig as her sister died, and 2 goldfish. My DD wants another kitten but I have said 3 cats is enough, especially as she will be going to university next year

3 cats
2 guinea pigs
5 rats
2 fish

As others have said money, time, space and quality of life are the important things when you decide on pets.

I probably wouldn't get anymore animals maybe a larger rat colony as although I have more time now I have less money.

7 rats. Not allowed any more unless a silverfawn female pops up at my breeders. Or a nakie as DH is fond of the idea of one!

1 dog
2 cats
1 very elderly rat
1 hen & 1 cockeral
plus at the farm I personally have
1 pygmy goat
1 pony
1 horse
and I share a young horse with my DP.

he runs a riding school so owns approximately 30 horses and ponies plus the other pygmy goat.

if I'm honest this does feel like a lot!
