If you wouldn't mind of course.

I'm not sure how petitions go down on here and I'm hoping I don't get the same reception as the "clap for children" request.. Grin

What an amazing and deserving man he is

Call me an old cynic but... Old man walks around garden. Is heavily promoted by PR savvy daughter. Everyone jumps on tear jerker sentimentalist band wagon, capturing nations hand wringing guilt about how shitly underfunded the NHS is and the danger a chaotic administration has caused workers by not providing them with sufficient PPE. Old man walks round garden, raises millions.
A knighthood, really?

No, but only because he's said he doesn't want it. If I'm wrong then yes, I will.

Why petition, and not the normal application and letters of support?

No - I’d rather be a captain and he already is one

I think Captain Tom Moore is a lovely gent and the result of what he has done is brilliant. However, I don't agree with the honours system at all so won't be signing.

When asked on BBC Breakfast yesterday he did comment that it would be marvellous but not something he expects to receive.

I'm worried about all the press coverage having a bad effect on him. He has been on TV so often and I'm concerned at him being overwhelmed by it all.

I don't think the petition would do anything, you need to go through the normal honours nomination system

I didn't realise he'd been on tv etc.
I was going to say he wouldn't want all the attention. Maybe a thank you from Boris. Or from the queen but that sets a precedent, lots of people do lots of work (long term often) for charity. Maybe an OBE like other charity workers get.

He’s done a lovely thing but I think the doctors and nurses who have sacrificed their lives should all be given posthumous awards first.

I didn’t think that you could go straight to a knighthood, thought you had to ‘work your way up’ through the honours system.
I’ve made an application for an OBE for someone before and the information needed for the application is huge.
I do think that he has done something wonderful though it has been massively publicised by the media without whom it wouldn’t have had anything like the impact it’s had. I expect being an army captain he has experienced far more acts of bravery deserving of recognition in his lifetime.
Some NHS staff are risking their lives, watching friends & colleagues desperately sick and passing way, working long shifts in physically demanding conditions where their masks cause them to faint and cut into their face, they hold the hands of people young and old as they take their last breaths in the absence of family, then they carry straight on. Yet its a well meaning old man walking round his garden to show his support to them that people are petitioning to be knighted.

They are different awards, the only posthumous award is a gallantry one.

@ShallallalAa I totally agree with you, he does seem a lovely man though. Someone else has jumped on the bandwagon now. But; it's for a good cause and they give these awards to all this silly celebs so I guess why not this guy.

He's raised a marvellous amount of money but I'm not sure I agree an honour is appropriate. He raised millions because his fundraising activities went viral - does that mean he is more deserving of an award than all the other, low-profile fundraisers who are active at the moment? Essentially, we shouldn't be doling out honours on the basis of how much things have been shared on the internet.

What he will be getting (just announced) is a Spitfire flypast on his birthday

(It must be dusty in here)

Is that essential travel? Grin

Just kidding...I think that's a lovely idea.

Yes, I agree - that's a very good idea.

No, I don’t think he deserves a knighthood for walking around his garden

Remember when - my memory is rubbish - when the (US?) airforce did a flyover for a man who tended a memorial garden since the war for a US aircrew who died when their plane crashed in England when he was a child - and the pilot had managed to steer the plane away from the town to a field?

Yes, I was blubbing as I am a big softie.

LordFrontPaw that was a Jong YS/UK flypast for the 75th anniversary of the Sheffield crash, where a US plane did not attempt an emergency landing because there were children playing in the park. All on board lost their lives.

That was a very emotional moment for many, including descendants of the men who died who came over from the US.

Oh that was it! He tended the memorial to the crew for all those years.
