I honestly think closing most schools, and only keeping some open for key workers (NHS staff, police etc), would be the best option. Would slow spread but ensure childcare for key workers, would also ease pressure on schools when staff start to go off sick. Also encourage everyone who can to WFH.

Close for how long? Are children to be kept indoors for the whole time? What about soft play centres, parks, trampoline venues, theme parks, water parks? Visiting friends?

I'm still hearing 'It's only flu' from some of the other mums at my DC's school. Some people are just not taking extra precautions at all and have their head in the sand which makes cases at the school likely. Term holiday are coming up anyway, what's an extra 2 weeks off? It's just common sense, children are the least likely to adhere to the 'don't touch your face without washing your hands'' message. They may not suffer much with the virus but they can spread it to vulnerable relatives.

Closing schools is one of the ways the experts are advising to slow spread. This is clear, has already been done in many countries to good effect.

Yes, it's something we're not used to in this country, yes it's strange. But it's what the experts will be advising behind closed doors at a certain point. From my point of view, if they're going to do it, the sooner the better as it will have a greater impact on slowing spread.

@Awkward1 YABU If you're that worried, you would want schools to stay open so the doctors and nurses and other health professionals can go to work and not stay at home to look after their kids.

So OP, what will Y11 and 13 do? They've got exams. Close the schools and cancel the exams ?
Who will cover parents at work so that they can stay home with their primary aged children?

Our councils very vague atm, What I really want to know is if the closure of schools will affect attendance levels? Our kids were marked down 9 days for the beast from the east.

@m0therofdragons The NHS staff are already on the frontline. They're already taking a risk greater than being in school. For which people are very grateful. Shutting the schools temporarily would've slowed, possibly even halted, the spread. Therefore lessening the risk to all - including NHS staff and their children. It's about mitigating the risks. Short-term inconvenience over long-term disruption. It's too late perhaps to stop this disease but it would still be of huge benefit to slow the spread. Hospitals and NHS staff won't cope otherwise - and be at more risk themselves.

Oh ffs this is ridiculous. What if your GP now has to stay at home to look after her kids who go to your kids school? Or you gran doesn’t get her carer because her carer has no childcare now school is shut? People are more at risk with services shutting down than at risk of bloody corona.

Schools are doing the square root of fuck all to protect staff. Soon enough they will have to be closed as we drop like flies. I had a class think it was funny to take my water bottle from my desk yesterday and sneakily pass it round. Kids repeatedly sneeze into their hands and today I had to clean actual snot (lots of it) off one of the desks.

Those of you who think it can't work need to think again. It's going to have to work at some point.
