My friend was killed and didn't get justice. Will mumsnetters help to stop it happening to someone else?

In 2015, nearly 5000 people were killed of seriously injured in hit and runs in London alone.

This number is on the rise. Leaving a fatal accident scene benefits the perpetrator as if they are caught they face a much lesser sentence of Leaving the Scene rather than Death by Dangerous Driving.

My friend was one of those killed and his family are trying to change the law so that leaving the scene of fatal hit and runs is a comparable offence and remove the once incentive to drive away. He was left to die in the road aged 36 and the man who killed him served just 61 days in prison.

This crime can happen to anyone of us. Children have been killed in hit and runs. Elderly people have too.

Children have been left without a mother or a father because of this crime.
For those who callously drive away and leaving someone dying in the road to get a sentence of days or weeks it's vile.

Imagine how you'd feel if this happened to a loved one? I really hope it never happens to anyone reading but it could.

Please help change this law so that justice can be done for victims and their families.* *
We're trying to get to 10000 signatures by 20th June on this petition petition.parliament.uk/petitions/208008

Please help Mumsnet, for all the victims, past and future of this cowardly and devastating crime.

I've signed already - but I can’t believe that you aren't already charged with leaving the scene as well as causing death by dangerous driving Angry It's appalling, quite frankly - it should be seen as an aggravating factor (or whatever it's called) and lead to an automatically much increased sentence, instead of acting as an incentive for someone to do a runner Angry

Flowers to you, OP, and all the other families and friends betrayed by the current "Justice" system

If you'd lost someone you cared about in this way, you'd "bang on" about it too.

I have signed your petition and I wish you all the best.

But I can see that multiple threads are annoying some posters - and they also may fall foul of MNHQ's talk guidelines RE spam. It might be best to keep it to just one thread at a time, then start a new one when that fills up.

Signed. It seems like nothing much has changed in the last 47 years. My Mum was killed by a hit and run driver in January 1972, he actually mounted the pavement but he didn’t get any kind of sentence.
