That's a really good point cheese. I'm not actually sure what the alternatives are, as I just became interested in the petition rather than signing (I didn't start it). Would be very interested to know what else is out there to replace plastic straws.

We use silicon straws and just wash and reuse! Also have some glass straws, and a few metal ones, but the silicon are best, came with a little brush for cleaning.

Tesco (and loads of other places) actually sell paper straws.

There is no need for anyone to buy 'disposable' plastic ones.

I bought stainless steel ones from Lakeland .
They come with a brush and go in the dishwasher.
Only downside is (apart from making sure the come back to me not lost in DS room) is they are a bit like the guinea-pigs water bottle spouts

Paper straws are not a good enough replacement for plastic straws. They disintergrate in the liquid quite quickly.

The steel ones are much better or the cups with the straws built in are also a good option.

I find plastic straws really useful! Particularly for applying expanding foam into small voids, skirting and windows particularly!

We use bamboo straws - you can wash them in the dishwasher. We bought four about five months ago and they're still going strong and they can be composted when they're done.

The silicone straws, & the (non bendy) paper straws aren't comparable to the plastic ones though. They are more expensive & I highly doubt that a pack of 6 of the silicone straws costing £6-9 would last as long as £6-9 worth of disposable straws. Especially given the propensity for small children to chew on straws.

Not everyone can use steel spoons.
A number of people I work with bite down on cutlery and straws. Nothing to do with creating a drama, but minimizing damage to teeth and gums.

Why plastic straws and not plastic cups?
I’d rather Tesco stopped selling meat actually as I think it’s immoral and causes a lot of environmental harm. But I wouldn’t assume everyone should follow my moral code. I’ll let my dc continue with his four straws a week habit.

Actually I'm quite happy with my carbon footprint. No foreign holidays, no car, no dishwasher. We've used the tumble dryer 3 times this year. Solar panels. I'll stick with disposable straws to take my meds, thanks. My husband has to hold the cup & put the straw in my mouth because I can't always do it but feel free to judge me for using a bendable plastic straw.

Why can't people just use silicon or paper straws?

Single use plastic straws are being phased out by restaurants in my city. Can't happen soon enough .
