An epetition has been set up to campaign for parents to once again have the choice of either MMR or single vaccines for their children.

It's not very democratic is it? It's like getting your ballot paper and it only has the Conservative MP. Still with 182 votes in six weeks, I guess it doesn't matter.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that but I'd say it is no less democratic than the current NHS choice of MMR or nothing.

I didn't set it up and it's not quite worded how I would wish but the message is still the same.

given that single mumps vaccine is not even produced, the petition is rather futile.

The single mumps vaccine has been in production in the past and the same strain is now used in the MMR. I would hope that if the Government talked very nicely to the vaccine producers and crossed their palms with more gold then it could be brought back into production without too much fuss.

I'm not saying the MMR is unsafe, the MMR is the right choice for the majority of parents. However, for those that feel it's not the right choice, the only alternative is 'nothing' or paying privately for single vaccines and as somebody has already pointed out, the Mumps vaccine is not available.

I don't see why 'feelings' should come into it. The NHS provides a perfectly safe vaccination for measles, mumps and rubella already.
Unless your children have genuine allergies or immune problems. Just give them the MMR...

The producers stopped production because it wasn't financially viable for them any more. They're not going to restart for the minimal order they would get from the NHS.

The MMR is safe! There is no need to have the single vaccines! I don't understand why you'd rather stab a poor child repeatedly instead of just twice anyway !

Not for me, MMR is safe and provides best coverage for the child and those around them.

Yes I do believe there is a petition on the website to make vaccines mandatory.

No vaccine is 'perfectly safe', they all come with an element of risk. That is why the Government runs a Vaccine Damage compensation scheme.

It's great that MMR is the right choice for some of you, at least you have been able to vaccinate your kids the way you wanted.

I don't see why it would result in a lower take-up. Parents that are pro MMR would surely still choose MMR, for all the same reasons you are throwing at this thread. Parents that currently choose 'nothing' as MMR is not the right choice for them, would have the option to vaccinate with singles. Why do you think more people would choose not to vaccinate at all. Most people would agree that vaccination is best for your child and the 'herd'.

Single vaccinations are not a sensible option. Far too many people would start down the single vaccine route and then not stick through the course and end up not protected. It is far more sensible to protect the whole population efficiently with the combined vaccine.

The person who implied the MMR vaccine was not safe was LYING, he was acting dishonestly and cannot be trusted. There is no evidence for any of the allegations he made.

Here is an equivalent scenario:

On a ferry that is experiencing a spot of trouble such that the crew start advising everyone to put on life vests, someone shouts out "They are trying to kill us - some of these so-called life vests will explode and injure you - don't wear them!". This causes a panic and in the ensuing incident some people who didn't wear life vests drown.

The person who shouts this is shown to be a liar who shouted this for their own ends, with no basis in fact, and was in fact being paid by a competitor of the manufacturer of those life vests. He is later prosecuted and convicted for doing such a terrible thing and risking people's lives by creating a false scare.

Next time you are on a ferry that is experiencing a spot of trouble such that the crew start advising everyone to put on life vests, do you put yours on, or choose not to wear it in case this bloke was telling the truth?

You want the government to bribe pharmaceutical companies to make a vaccine that is now obsolete and less effective than the MMR.
Yeah that should play out well.

Vaccine manufacturers issue information of possible side effects for all the vaccines, as I mentioned earlier, ALL vaccines carry an element of risk. Have a look at the records for compensation awarded by the Vaccine Damage Compensation Unit.

The Government could always trial single vaccines alongside MMR and do a study as to how effective it was at meeting their 'herd immunity' targets. Then we would know for sure what the outcome was rather than surmising.

It is also misguided to assume that ALL parents shunning the MMR have done so exclusively due to a scare story over 10 years ago.
