Pedants' corner

Every day I have to suppress the urge...

to respond to threads with responses such as:

"Hmmm - have you tried buying a dictionary?"

or

"Well, I'm afraid I've never heard of a vacunm cleaner so am unable to help you, I'm afraid."

I never do, of course, but just wanted to tell you people. No doubt I'll get my comeuppance for such ungenerous thoughts!

Sorry, I tried to suppress my urge too, but 'ungenerous'? Is it a word?

Report
FlamingoBingo · 09/10/2009 18:00

I do too. Often have to stop myself writing "actually, it's 'lose' not 'loose'", and other similar corrections.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/10/2009 18:00

Yes, it's a word.

blowbroth · 09/10/2009 18:02

Ok! Sorry, shoot me down!

(Should 'blowbroth' be hyphenated? )

Shouldn't it be "Cripes-a-Lawky"?

Report
Katisha · 09/10/2009 21:19

From the exclamation "Lawks!"

I succumbed this week

I just couldn't see 'peadophile' written one more time. It pushed me over the edge and I snapped.

They'll be picketing outside the Birdseye factory next.

Gah.

I've just learnt tonight on the bus, that in Dutch, for some plurals, you have to put an apostrophe between the word and the s! I'm bad enough at errant apostrophes already! Can I have a pedant's get out of jail free card? I have to learn the bloody language.

What interesting buses you have WartScreamo.

Katisha - Lawks!

Ah, you never hear that nowadays ( nostalgia emoticon).

Not sure I've ever heard it, actually, except in 19th century literature.

glad it's not just me....the one that has had my fingers itching is the Noah's Arc (it's ARK FGS!) thread........
And the text speak in titles - sorry I just cringe inside...

  • I'm so embarrassed in case Katisha is right! I think she might be!

Cripes, Cripes! Don't go!
Any pedant is a good pedant. We need you here!

Report
cripesalorky · 11/10/2009 11:09

Well... I'll stay, but only if I can tell you about the beauty salon which has opened near me called 'Kimmy,s'...

It has a comma, you see, where the apostrophe should be...

But you pedants don't need ME to point that out!

Actually you might as well point out ppls errors in a nice way, it stops everyone copying and making the same mistake.

Report
retiredgoth2 · 11/10/2009 11:21

I always copy ppls errors.

Report
cripesalorky · 11/10/2009 11:24

i'm not sure there is a nice way - you just look like an arse, I think, especially if they are talking about something important!

"Well, you might be losing your grip on reality, but I very much doubt that you are loosing it..."

Loosening it?

Report
cripesalorky · 11/10/2009 11:48

But that makes it sounds like a deliberate action...

retiredgoth2 · 11/10/2009 11:51

Not necessarily deliberate.

One's grip may be loosened by factors not within one's control.

However, if the grip is loosened, then, even if it is precarious, it has not been lost....

I think MNHQ should invent a new 'report this post' button where the pedants can ask MNHQ to edit grammar, spelling etc mistakes. That way we don't have to suffer the abominations but we don't publically embarrass the perpetrator either.
It could be a fulltime job responding to the calls - can I apply for it, please>

Oh. How did my '?' end up as a '>' ?

Typo? > and ? are next tp each other.

cripesalorky · 11/10/2009 12:17

But if you are loosening your grip on reality (as in original sentence) then it sounds deliberate - that's what I meant!
