Every day I have to suppress the urge...

(26 Posts)

to respond to threads with responses such as:

"Hmmm - have you tried buying a dictionary?"

or

"Well, I'm afraid I've never heard of a vacunm cleaner so am unable to help you, I'm afraid."

I never do, of course, but just wanted to tell you people. No doubt I'll get my comeuppance for such ungenerous thoughts!

Sorry, I tried to suppress my urge too, but 'ungenerous'? Is it a word?

FlamingoBingo Fri 09-Oct-09 18:00:16

I do too. Often have to stop myself writing "actually, it's 'lose' not 'loose'", and other similar corrections.

OldLadyKnowsNothing Fri 09-Oct-09 18:00:28

Yes, it's a word.

blowbroth Fri 09-Oct-09 18:02:28

Ok! Sorry, shoot me down!

cripesalorky Fri 09-Oct-09 21:17:45

<shoots blowbroth down>

(Should 'blowbroth' be hyphenated? wink)

Katisha Fri 09-Oct-09 21:18:51

Shouldn't it be "Cripes-a-Lawky"?

Katisha Fri 09-Oct-09 21:19:23

From the exclamation "Lawks!"

tethersend Fri 09-Oct-09 21:40:35

I succumbed this week blush

I just couldn't see 'peadophile' written one more time. It pushed me over the edge and I snapped.

They'll be picketing outside the Birdseye factory next.

Gah.

I've just learnt tonight on the bus, that in Dutch, for some plurals, you have to put an apostrophe between the word and the s! I'm bad enough at errant apostrophes already! Can I have a pedant's get out of jail free card? I have to learn the bloody language.

campion Sat 10-Oct-09 02:37:55

What interesting buses you have WartScreamo.

Katisha - Lawks!

Ah, you never hear that nowadays ( nostalgia emoticon).

Not sure I've ever heard it, actually, except in 19th century literature.

Blackduck Sat 10-Oct-09 07:06:37

glad it's not just me....the one that has had my fingers itching is the Noah's Arc (it's ARK FGS!) thread........
And the text speak in titles - sorry I just cringe inside...

cripesalorky Sat 10-Oct-09 07:43:35

blush - I'm so embarrassed in case Katisha is right! I think she might be!

<<hangs head and crawls back to the land where its / it's really are interchangeable>>

Katisha Sat 10-Oct-09 08:29:33

Cripes, Cripes! Don't go!
Any pedant is a good pedant. We need you here!

cripesalorky Sun 11-Oct-09 11:09:33

Well... I'll stay, but only if I can tell you about the beauty salon which has opened near me called 'Kimmy,s'...

It has a comma, you see, where the apostrophe should be...

But you pedants don't need ME to point that out!

shock shock

Dominique07 Sun 11-Oct-09 11:17:01

Actually you might as well point out ppls errors in a nice way, it stops everyone copying and making the same mistake. grin

retiredgoth2 Sun 11-Oct-09 11:21:36

I always copy ppls errors.

cripesalorky Sun 11-Oct-09 11:24:53

i'm not sure there is a nice way - you just look like an arse, I think, especially if they are talking about something important!

"Well, you might be losing your grip on reality, but I very much doubt that you are loosing it..."

grin

bronze Sun 11-Oct-09 11:29:04

Loosening it?

cripesalorky Sun 11-Oct-09 11:48:04

But that makes it sounds like a deliberate action...

retiredgoth2 Sun 11-Oct-09 11:51:38

Not necessarily deliberate.

One's grip may be loosened by factors not within one's control.

However, if the grip is loosened, then, even if it is precarious, it has not been lost....

senua Sun 11-Oct-09 11:58:55

I think MNHQ should invent a new 'report this post' button where the pedants can ask MNHQ to edit grammar, spelling etc mistakes. That way we don't have to suffer the abominations but we don't publically embarrass the perpetrator either.
It could be a fulltime job responding to the calls - can I apply for it, please>grin

senua Sun 11-Oct-09 12:00:41

Oh. How did my '?' end up as a '>' ?

bronze Sun 11-Oct-09 12:13:18

Typo? > and ? are next tp each other.

cripesalorky Sun 11-Oct-09 12:17:52

But if you are loosening your grip on reality (as in original sentence) then it sounds deliberate - that's what I meant!
