When people type "I should of...." instead of "I should have...".

Makes me want to scrub out the inside of my head with a pan scourer

I hate it too. And another really common one is 'where' instead of 'were'. What is that about? Do a lot of people actually pronounce were that way and that is why they misspell it?

.... and 'your' instead of 'you're'

"What you got?" directed towards three yo DD1. I constantly correct to "What do you have?" Even my dear father, who has been known to telephone the BBC to correct their mistakes, fell foul of this the other day. Why do people feel the need to drop grammer from the window when speaking to small children? (Aside, sorry, grammer? grammar? Typed both and they both looked right. I am too tired to think clearly!)

I don't like: "Can I get?"

"There's no one quite like grammer
And I know you will agree
That she always is a friend to you
And she's a friend to me..."

pjmama,

I know it's irritating, but you can see why they do it.... "I should've" does sound amazingly like "I should of".

Wow, I've got my kind hat on today. It doesn't come out very often!

Puppymonkey. Quite agree with "Can I get.." There's no excusing unnecessary Americanisms! Makes me shiver.

"How are you?"

"I'm good, thanks".

AAAAGHH! I'm asking after your health, not your behaviour!

exactly, I'm good, that is a matter of opinion.

DD (5) quite clearly says 'should of' etc, so I know what she's going to be writing, given half a chance ... sigh. I'm biting my lip though, and concentrating on trying to get her to say 'because' and 'before' instead of 'acause' and 'afore', weird child.

lol at "I'm good" - my sister says this - she is 48 FGS

The thing that narks me is people using "beg the question" incorrectly. I see it all over the place. Even my tutor did it

Last night's Home Show flashed up some titles talking of "Complimentary Colours"- is that free paint then? Or does the wall talk and tell you how nice you look?

Report
EmmaPr · 29/07/2009 23:29

My DD says somethink instead of something, but then I know alot of adults who do too. It's quite a common one.

People who drop 'literally' into every sentence is another one.

gotten is ok though, just a bit archaic this side of the atlantic

think of ill-gotten gains for example

I hate 'what do you want?' when it's actually 'what would you like?' - we 'want for nothing' because we are very lucky but there are things which we might 'like'.

Rant over DH does it all the time and I have to mutter under my breath!

I hate the weird new use of "X and I" after a preposition, eg 'He gave it to X and I'

It just makes me cringe.
