Could it just be a pronunciation thing rather than a spelling thing. Remember Simon Cowell getting all cross when they kept referring to 'Ahba' rather than Abba on American Idol?

am american andlove these discissions . i've been here nearly 12 years and still say kebob, pahsta, yoh-ghurt, scone (long o). and i think i do say 'Hairy' for harry. i didn't realise I was wrong in my pronunciation until i moved here, hehe, and my FIL and friends kept laughing at me.

however, i do say tomahto, herbs, mum (i hate the word 'mom' but do call mine that). I'm also training myself to say water instead of 'wadder' which is a tough one.

i can see how our accent would annoy though, when i go back to visit and everyone's speaking in a twang, i find it very grating. not sure I'd like to adopt the Yorkshire accent, though, which is where i live. that's a whole other language, eebygum.

gwynneth does a good one, Renee Z's is OTT, and my US friends think Madonna has a british accent (go figure)...

my accent is definitely american (most people tell me they like it) but I've been told i sound very posh when i say 'to-mahh-to' and (now)'wah-tah'. i'm rahhthahh proud of that.
