now I think... and I'm prepared to be corrected... but I think that smoking as not allowed inside but it is outside. Outside is still technically on the premises so that is why the sign reads "IN"

Or maybe they've just got it wrong.

hmmm, sounds plausible...

Hmm not 100 per cent sure about this, and slightly falling asleep, so may be fuzzy, but as far as I know "the premises" are the land rather than the building/s on the land - if I am right about this then the preposition would be "on" rather than "in".

VintageGardenia · 30/07/2008 21:32

"On the premises" would naturally include "in any building on the premises".

I thought premises was literally the footprint of a property. The house is built on premises belonging to xxx. That would include the garden. So shouldn't it be "smoking is not allowed anywhere in this building"

RuffleTheAnimal · 30/07/2008 21:38

yeah, thats what i reckon. it should say either anywehere IN this building or anywhere ON these premises

bugs me

Have a fag.

Just to point out, though, that you're now banned from PD for using "ones" instead of "one's" in your title...

Report
fryalot · 30/07/2008 21:41

when you've got your fag good and lit, stub it out on the i of the word "in"

You can then claim that you were just correcting their appalling grammar and not, in fact, breaking the law by smoking ON the premises

Report
VintageGardenia · 30/07/2008 21:41

And you're banned for using PD instead of PC...

b. a building together with its grounds or other appurtenances.(excellent word!!)
