1940's memorabilia...

DP says I am wrong to pedanticize it (yes, I know that's not a word, but it sounds good, doesn't it ) because everything featured could technically be from 1940 and therefore belongs to that year.

I think that the sign was written by someone who would also have apostrophied (again, I know, but it works, doesn't it ) "MOT's" and "potatoe's"

Tell me I'm right.

Pleeeeeease?

I dunno.... I am with your DP with it being "memorabilia of the 1940s"

of course not

Therefore 1940's being right.

I am usually wrong though

he says that the memorabilia is specific to the year 1940, not the whole decade. In his argument, this makes the apostrophe right. Again, in his argument, if they mean the whole decade then there should not be an apostrophe there...

Oh yes, I was thinking of 40s so it should be 40s' for my theory???

yes, he said that!

But I think that they just wanted to say "wartime stuff" and got it wrong.

I suspect I'm being unfair though...

Wartime Stuff is much better

how do I smuggle a new sign into the village primary school and replace the one that says "1940's memorabilia" without anyone noticing and/or thinking I'm a loon?

Send a small child to fall over noisily on the opposite side, and switch it quick when they are all focussed on helping bleeding child.

I carry a big marker pen in my bag for all sign correcting occasions.... DS falls over often and doesn't seem to feel pain. Tis the perfect team

Your husband is wrong, because no one hosting a memorabilia sale from 1940 would call it a 1940's Sale. They'd call it a 1940 sale. A 1940's sale is just meaningless.
