Pedants' corner

letter from dd1's 'stage school' - read it and weep!

Dd1 does a mock-stagecoach activity on a Saturday - the woman who runs it is a fully qualified secondary school teacher and sent out this letter last week:

"Dear parents/guardians

I am sure you are aware we have a show coming up in July, the show fee per student for the show will be £10.00, and this will cover costumes and insurance.

I did not charge a show fee at the Christmas show due to the show been for charity!

I am sure you will be aware all the theatre school's charge a show fee as it is easier for parents rather than having to trail the shops looking for items of costume!

Kind Regards,

......
School Principle

I enclose the show fee for my son/daughter
whom attends the .... academy on a Saturday.
"

(I said to dh that there's no way I can just sign and return the tear-off slip like that! Do you think it'd be naughty to cross out the 'm'?)

The scripts the children are given display the same complete lack of basic grammar. I'm considering taking dd1 out, partly because of this - I don't want her to be reading scripts and learning lines that are full of unintentional, serious mistakes.

Am also pretty shocked that you can actually qualify as a teacher without a basic understanding of English grammar. And not even get your title right.

'Principle' is truly dreadful.

I'd be tempted to club together with the other parents, and buy her a directors' chair, with 'Principle' printed on the back!

Big strikeout in red is required!

I work (admin) at a uni where they teach teacher training. The standard of grammar, english and spelling is horrendous amongst the students so I'm guessing that this sort of thing will not only become more common, but probably the norm.

I think it's the 'show been for charity!' that really gets me.

That is appalling. I would be ashamed to send out a letter like that to our parents.

"I am sure you will be aware all the theatre school's charge a show fee as it is easier for parents rather than having to trail the shops looking for items of costume!"

Not true anyway. We do not charge a show fee and we provide all costumes and tickets are free.

did you know also that it should be 'is due to' - things shouldn't start 'due to'...

does this teacher have a twee accent too, because when I read it I imagined her sounding like Lynda Snell...

Disgraceful. I think you have to tackle this.

Very very basic errors of English - one can excuse some mistakes on the grounds that not everyone is as pedantic as those of us in pedants' corner but "been for" and "principle"

You don't need to be a pedant to see just how bad that letter is! lol

Haha, should I post this in AIBU? 'AIBU to remove my dd from stage school because the 'principle' can't write a single sentence without making mistakes?'

God I'm depressed. Don't tear off the slip. Correct the whole thing in red pen and send it all back with a copy of Fowler's Modern English Usage
