I have just discovered this section - I am now officially addicted to MN. I will be on here all the time, day and night. I am a pedant and proud! In fact I might make a badge saying that. I would begin by stating my pet hate - but there are so many I don't know where to start... After a think I it has to be 'could of, should of, would of' Angry

Welcome, I love coming to read stuff in pedant's corner. It releases some frustration so that I can go back into the real world and continue to ignore the things that are driving me slightly nuts inside. Particularly 'free reign', that's so common now that I'm expecting to become the correct usage in the next decade or so.

I admire your bravery in using TWO exclamation marks in pedant's corner. Grin

I've just found it, too, thanks to a post on another thread.

My life is now complete, my soul, awoken!

I have found my people . . . . . . . . .

Yes! 'Could of' really grinds my gears. Your and you're? There, their and they're? 🤦

"Less" vs "fewer"

The Grocer's Apostrophe in all of its hideous incarnations . . . .

Or should that be Grocers' Apostrophe? Grin

Rob vs steal. Enormity.

Sorry to say, though, it's Pedants' Corner.

I noticed that I had made a mistake re pedant’s/pedants’ as soon as I’d pressed post villainousbroodmare, but I didn’t mention it in the hope that nobody else would notice. A rather vain and stupid hope considering the topic I was posting under. 😄

I find 'ect' really annoying. I think people write it that way because so many pronounce it 'eck - cetera' rather than 'et - cetera', so I guess it seems logical to them that the 'c' comes after the 'e' in the abbreviation.

"hung" vs "hanged"

All the time on news reports about suicide/ historical programmes etc.

Pictures are hung. People are hanged.

(Sorry - I know this isn't nice but it grates on me)

I hope this is okay lazy
- I'm always careful to use etc., but sometimes miss the full stop to indicate an abbreviation. Please forgive me.

I honestly didn't know, Iklboo.

One of the worst instances I've seen of the Grocer's/Grocers' Apostrophe actually said "potatoe's"

I almost cried.

A shop near us advertised

Bed's
Sofa's
Mattresse's

I needed a stiff drink after witnessing that.

I've been known to post SPAG memes on Facebook, but don't correct people directly. People 'like' them, but no one says anything. I suppose I should be grateful that they're aware that I silently judge them Grin

There was a thread today were the OP consistently wrote 'que' when she meant 'queue', even after other posters spelled it correctly and one poster mentioned it. Maybe she thought she was right and the others were wrong?

Breath and breathe. Your and you're. Past and passed. They are incredibly straightforward to get right. I can't take much more of seeing them used incorrectly!
