What are these phrases called?

I am no expert on grammar as I'll probably reveal during this post. I have a brother in law who uses endless phrases such as
"At the end of the day"
"going to crash and burn" he's tired.
Saying "as you do" at the end of mundane sentences which he thinks makes them hysterically funny.
Are they just cliches? Whatever they are they drive me crazy. They seem different from things like "it's raining cats and dogs" but I don't know why?

They’re phrases. But your bil sounds annoying!!

They’re not idioms like ‘raining cats and dogs’. They’re more like management speak...
